MCCJ was a cooperative effort of many organizations and individuals but, Dr. J. Noel Heermance, professor of English at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, was the director and driving force.

The Missouri Humanities Council was founded in 1971 and is affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has offices in Kansas City and St. Louis.
