He was the director of publicity and research of the reorganized National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and editor of The Crisis, its publication. The Crisis transformed the African American world as well as a large portion of the liberal white world. The Crisis Magazine collection documents publication years 1969 to 2000.
