Five diaries written by Robert T. McMahan, a seminary student from Canfield, Ohio. He enlisted in the Second Ohio Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company E, on September 3, 1861, and was mustered out on September 18, 1864. He served as a cavalry soldier and gunner in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, and was promoted to corporal on October 29, 1862. Additional material includes letters written to and from Robert T. McMahon, discussing Civil War and family matters. Also included are various certificates and other military papers, pre and post-Civil War newspapers, and some photographs.

The collection contains journals written by a day laborer, who was born in 1876 in Holt's Summit, Callaway County, Missouri, and later resided in Columbia, Missouri. McManaway writes about his friends, neighbors, and people from church, as well as makes notes on the weather, gardening, and daily activities. He lived with his sister Maggie, who is mentioned often. McManaway also intersperses his journal entries with repeatedly copied quotes, aphorisms, and verses, such as "The good fairy can not beat this," "Who runs may read," and "Cleanliness is next to godliness," among many others. It is unclear whether these lines and phrases are penmanship exercises or if they were used as a means of self-improvement.

Records of the St. Louis March on Washington Movement, which was founded in response to A. Phillip Randolph's call for a march to end discrimination in defense work. Executive Order 8802 established the Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC) in June 1941. The local
MOWM picketed businesses and industry, staged mass rallies and succeeded in bringing the FEPC to St. Louis in August 1944 to hold hearings.

He talks of the horrors of the battle near Murphreesboro and predicts a greater one in Chattanooga, where he expects to be sent. Also included is a certificate of service showing Mee died at Andersonville Prison in 1864.
