CA6596 Ferrill Family Papers 1862-1864, 1881

Civil War letters written between Union soldier John B. Ferrill of Sedalia, Missouri, and his wife Martha Jane Sparks. Ferrill served in Company A of the 33rd Missouri Infantry Regiment. He died in 1863 and was buried in Jefferson Barracks. Also includes pension materials for his widow and some transcriptions.

CA6601 Aurelius C. McManaway Journals 1920s-1930s

The collection contains journals written by a day laborer, who was born in 1876 in Holt's Summit, Callaway County, Missouri, and later resided in Columbia, Missouri. McManaway writes about his friends, neighbors, and people from church, as well as makes notes on the weather, gardening, and daily activities. He lived with his sister Maggie, who is mentioned often. McManaway also intersperses his journal entries with repeatedly copied quotes, aphorisms, and verses, such as "The good fairy can not beat this," "Who runs may read," and "Cleanliness is next to godliness," among many others. It is unclear whether these lines and phrases are penmanship exercises or if they were used as a means of self-improvement.

The papers of John A. Filippello include three digital prints and a sketch by Mort Walker. Two of the images are of the January 5, 1923, train collision in Linn County, Missouri. The final image was taken near the likely birthplace of General John J. Pershing.
