The Loman and Laura Cansler Collection represents a lifetime of collecting on Missouri’s folk song and folklore tradition. Cansler recorded and collected folk songs, proverbs, jokes, and home remedies, primarily in Missouri, but also in Kansas and Illinois. In addition to this large body of folk song and folklore material, the collection includes information on Cansler’s early life in Dallas County, Missouri, his WWII service, and his career as a school counselor at the Fayette and North Kansas City High Schools. The collection also includes slides and prints of Laura Cansler’s abstract expressionist artwork.

The daybooks begin in 1923 when she lived in Illinois and end in 1943 when her husband, Harry Carlson, was being transferred around the country in the United States Armed services. Carlson commented on her personal and daily routine but often referred to wider topics such as the Depression, the Dust Bowl in Kansas, international affairs, politics, the League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, and the YWCA.

Also included, are a photocopy of a letter written by Carney's son in 1969 explaining the history of the notes and an audio cassette with transcript containing Ben Carney Jr.'s explanation of the B.F. Carney dollar.

Twenty-two carpenters met on December 8, 1871, to form the St. Louis Cabinet Makers' Protective Union. The following year they affiliated with the International Cabinet Makers' Union of America, becoming Local 12. In 1903 the local became part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America as Local 1596. The collection includes records of other unions that joined Local 1596. Early volumes are in German.
