R0301 Alfred B. Cree Papers 1862-1863

The Alfred B. Cree Papers contain the letters of Capt. Alfred B. Cree of Co. F., 22nd Iowa Infantry. Cree wrote of family matters, camp life, and regimental politics from Benton Barracks at St. Louis, and from camps at Rolla, Salem, Iron Mountain, and Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, 1862-1863. There is also a single letter from Charlestown in what is now West Virginia, in 1864.

R0302 Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Vienna Circuit Records 1887-1908

These are records of quarterly conferences of the Vienna Circuit, which included churches at Vienna, Bloom Garden, Bodendick, Branson Chapel, Enterprise, and Hughes Chapel in Maries County, and Lawson in Miller County, Missouri. The reports include minutes of meetings, financial records, and statements of spiritual conditions within the circuit.

These are ledgers, 1862-1869, from a bakery in St. Louis, and from Paydown Mill on the Gasconade River in Maries County, Missouri. There are also a few papers, 1881-1897, of the proprietors of the mill and store at Paydown.

R0304 Jesse N. Self Papers 1860-1863

The Jesse N. Self Papers contain photocopies of letters to his family by Jesse N. Self, a schoolteacher at Irondale, Missouri, and captain of Company F, 32nd Missouri Infantry. The collection includes letters from Irondale, 1860, and from camps in Rolla and Benton Barracks in St. Louis, 1861-1862. Capt. Self died of erysipelas at Memphis, Tennessee, on February 25, 1863.

R0306 Midco Mercantile Company Records circa 1920

The Midco Mercantile Company Collection contains an unused coupon book from the general store at Midco, two miles north of Fremont in Carter County, Missouri. The business was owned by the Mid-Continent Iron Company, which operated an iron furnace and chemical plant at Midco until 1921.

These are miscellaneous papers of Shelton E. Thurman, a veteran of World War One and resident of Farmington, Missouri. The collection includes a photograph of the 3rd Battalion Teamsters, U.S. Army, Trier, Germany, a postcard to his wife, Elsie May, and his victory medal, all circa 1919. There are also postwar views of Thurman and his wife.

The Munger Securities Company Collection contains an illustrated pamphlet published by the Munger Securities Company, promoting real estate offerings in southern Missouri. The tracts were primarily in Carter County, but extended into portions of Butler, Reynolds, and Ripley counties. The local offices were in Hunter, Missouri.

R0309 John Calvin Hughes Papers 1827-1863

The John Calvin Hughes Papers contain typescripts of the Civil War letters of John C. Hughes, a native of Washington County, Missouri, and member of Company I, 33rd Missouri Infantry. He wrote to his wife from camps at St. Louis, Rolla, Salem, Houston, and Hartville, Missouri; Columbus, Kentucky; and Helena, Arkansas.

R0310 Roller Family Papers 1866-1871

The Roller Family Papers contain photocopies and typescripts of papers, mostly correspondence, of the Roller family of Christian and Douglas counties in Missouri and Scott County, Virginia. With one exception the letters are addressed to Jacob Roller, in Virginia, from his relatives in Missouri. The exception is a letter from General R. Johnson, an in-law to the Rollers, of Douglas County, to his mother, Sarah (Bowen) Johnson.

The Alfred N. Nelson Papers contain a photocopy of a letter written on November 25, 1861, by Alfred N. Nelson of Company F, 10th Iowa Infantry, at Birds Point in Mississippi County, Missouri. Nelson mentioned camp sickness and operations in southeastern Missouri.

R0312 Edward Leo Welter Papers 1918-1919

This is a diary of overseas service by a native of Kelso, Scott County, Missouri, and an enlisted
member of Co. F, 110th Engineers, 35th Division, U.S. Army. E. L. Welter served in France along
the Somme River and in the Vosges Mountains, was part of the reserve during the St. Mihiel
offensive, and came under fire during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.

R0313 Leonard Valentine Bolon Papers 1865-1866

The Leonard Valentine Bolon Papers contain photocopies of two Civil War letters, from Rolla and Benton Barracks in St. Louis, written by Leonard V. Bolon of Co. F, 49th Wisconsin Infantry. Also included is a photocopy of verse written in Cuba, Illinois, Bolon’s hometown, in 1866.

The Lane’s Prairie General Store Records contain a photocopy of a daybook from an unidentified general store at Lane’s Prairie in Maries County, Missouri, thought to have been operated by Francis M. Johnson. With the daybook is an undated letter by Maries County historian Everett M. King which contains speculation about the volume’s provenance.

The Lawrence County, Missouri Mercantile Records contain ledgers, journals, and daybooks on microfilm from mercantile establishments located in or near Mount Vernon in Lawrence County, Missouri. Included are records attributed to stores operated by “B. & O. Stone,” “Whaley & George,” Samuel Stone, “Haley & McCanse,” “Gay, Allen & Co.,” Nancy Stone, and “Kellogg & Whaley.”

This is a photocopy of an agreement for the sale of two slave children, by Christopher C. Cook to George N. Cook, July 21, 1860, probably in Crawford County, Missouri. Appended are biographical notes by William P. Elmer of Salem, Missouri, 1955.

The Henry Fulbright Records contain a microfilm copy of an account ledger from a general store operated by Henry Fulbright at Springfield in Greene County, Missouri. William, and Ephraim R. Fulbright joined the firm as full partners on February 27, 1840. An index of the customers is available.

R0321 Greene County, Missouri Militia Exemption Records ca. 1863

The Greene County Missouri Militia Exemption Records contains a photocopy of an “Assessment Roll of Exemptions from Military Duty,” for Greene County, Missouri, circa 1863. The list bears the names of individuals who paid a tax in lieu of militia service during the Civil War, the fees paid, and the units from which exemptions were granted. Most exemptions were from duty in the 72nd and 74th regiments of Enrolled Missouri Militia.

These are minutes of meetings of the Session and the congregation, church registers, and the
centennial history of the First Presbyterian Church of Fredericktown in Madison County, Missouri.
Since 1964 Fredericktown has shared pastors with churches at Cornwall and Ironton.

The Rountree Family Papers contain photocopies of extracts from the diary of Joseph Rountree, 1819-1831, and the autobiography of William J. Rountree, circa 1910. There are also notes on the Rountree family by Frank Rountree, 1911-1912, Ruth Fowler Sherwood, 1947, and Joseph G. Rountree, 1956, with obituaries and birth-death records of family members.

The Levee District Number 3 Mississippi County, Missouri Collection contains a photocopy of a history of the levee district based in Mississippi County, Missouri, including a summary of levee construction prior to the flood of 1913 and improvements made after that date, with recommendations for future construction. The report was submitted to Little, Vardaman & Ditting of St. Louis, purchasers of the district’s construction bond.

The Aurora Grocer Company Records contains a minute book and miscellaneous papers of a wholesale grocery business located at Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri. The records include minutes of meetings of stockholders and directors, certificates of incorporation and dissolution, proxy authorizations, real estate papers, and an agreement to sell the remaining inventory in 1961.

These are individual accounts of drivers hauling barrels of sand for H. Wilder & Company at
Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, May-November 1856. The firm may have been operated by Henry Wilder
in association with his brothers, August, Mathew, and Peter. Payments to the drivers were made
through the firm of Janis & Valle in Ste. Genevieve.

R0337 Phelps County, Missouri Hospital Collection 1946

The Phelps County, Missouri Hospital Collection contains a leaflet promoting a bond issue for construction of a public hospital in Phelps County, Missouri. The proposition was accepted by voters in the general election of 5 November 1946. The Phelps County Memorial Hospital opened at Rolla in 1951. In the 1980’s the name was changed to Phelps County Regional Medical Center, and in 2019 the name was changed again to Phelps Health.

The letters note political differences among family members, events preceding the battle of Memphis in Scotland County, Missouri, guerrilla activity in Kentucky, and depredations by bushwhackers in Laclede County, Missouri.

It bears testimonials from mine owners and operators throughout the United States, including the Granby Smelting & Mining Company of Granby, the Desloge Lead Company of St. Francois County, and the Hazard Dressing Mill of Mine La Motte, Missouri.

The Jefferson B. Kirkland Papers contains a photocopy of a memoir of service during World War I by a native of Nicholas, Georgia, and member of Company F, 151st Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd United States Infantry Division. Kirkland served in northeastern France, 1917-1918, where he saw action in the Baccarat sector and in the defense of the Champagne front on the Marne River, April-July 1918.

The Moses Jasper Bradford Papers contain original and photocopied Civil War letters of a native of Relfe, Phelps County, Missouri, and an officer of the Missouri State Guard and the 10th Missouri Infantry (CSA). He wrote from camps in Missouri and Arkansas, and, after his capture in 1863, from Union prison camps in Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The Ward Loren Schrantz Papers are microfilm copies of memoirs of military service by a resident of Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri, who served in the Missouri National Guard and the U.S. Army before World War I. He was a captain of a machine gun battalion in Europe, 1917-1919, a reserve officer, 1920-1942, and a U.S. Army troopship commander during World War II.

R0362 St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company Records 1859-1980

These are corporate minutes and financial account books, and other records of the St. Louis-San Francisco ("Frisco") Railway Company (1916-1980) and predecessor, subsidiary, and constituent companies, most notably the St. Louis & San Francisco Railway (1876-1896) and the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad (1896-1916). The "Frisco" operated in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. It became part of the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1980. Also of note are four architectural drawing boxes that include the blueprints for structures along the St. Louis-San Francisco Line. A detailed inventory of the drawings is included in each of the four boxes.

The Frank Shaw Papers contain a photocopied journal of a mine superintendent who worked in the lead and zinc mines of Jasper County, Missouri. The journal covers January 1, through December 30, 1901. The entries include comments on various mines, mining equipment, mechanical problems, and financial matters.

These are papers of Margaret Ray Vickery, a newspaperwoman and author of Salem, Dent
County, Missouri. The papers consist of clippings, correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous
historical research material, most of which pertain to her award-winning weekly column, "Sugar and
Spice," published by the Salem News, 1952-1971. The collection also includes papers of the Vickery
and Ray families.

The Blow & Kennett Mining Company Records contain microfilm copies of records of lead shipped by Blow & Kennett from Granby in Newton County, Missouri, to points on the Osage and Missouri rivers, and to stations on the Pacific Railroad and the South West Branch of the Pacific Railroad. The records include the names of teamsters and totals of lead received by forwarding agents and on hand at Granby.

The Joplin Separating Company Records contain microfilmed records of the processing of lead and zinc ores from mines in and around Jasper County, Missouri. The volume also includes records of sales of processed ores to refining companies, and the sales and purchases of sand. The names and locations of various mines and operators are noted, as are the prices for various grades of ore.

The Center Valley Lead & Zinc Company Records are microfilmed records of mining leases to lots of the Baker and Hendrickson tracts in Jasper County, Missouri. The lots were controlled by the Center Valley Lead & Zinc Company of Webb City, Missouri. The entries note the rules for mining the properties, the names of miners who leased them, and forfeitures of leases.

The Royalty Land & Mining Company Records consists of test drilling of a tract at Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri, owned by the Royalty Land & Mining Company. Assays of the drill cores for lead and zinc content were performed by the Waring and Williams Laboratories of Webb City and are appended to the drill records.

The John James Sitton Civil War Memoir Collection contains a military history of the Oregon County, Missouri company of the 2nd Regiment, 7th Division, Missouri State Guard, July 4 through December 1, 1861. The narrative was written by John James Sitton, who also served in the 7th Division, but in a different regiment. Sitton became captain of the Oregon County men in later Confederate service. The memoir also includes biographical data on selected Oregon County soldiers.
