Rolla Manuscript Collections

The Lebanon Baptist Church, Bloomsdale, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records for the Lebanon Baptist Church located seven miles north of Bloomsdale in Sainte Genevieve County, Missouri. The records include minutes of meetings of the congregation and board of deacons, membership records, a church history, and miscellaneous historical material.

The William Henry Lynch Papers contain microfilm copies of the diaries and personal papers of an educator in southern Missouri. Lynch was a native of Houston, Texas County, Missouri. He served in the 32nd Missouri Infantry during the Civil War, and was principal of schools in Steelville, St. James, Salem, West Plains, and Mountain Grove, Missouri, following the war.

The John P. Sheahan Papers contain a microfilm copy of letters written during World War II by John P. Sheahan Jr. to his wife, Grace. Sheahan served with the 2306th Quartermaster Service Company, training at camps in California, Florida, and Virginia. He died at Slapton Sands in the English Channel on April 28, 1944.

The Beverly A. Davis Papers contain a Civil War letter written by a member of the 32nd Missouri Infantry at Rouse’s Plantation, North Carolina, to his niece, Ellen, at Steelville, Missouri. Davis commented on the capture of Richmond, Virginia, and the prospects for peace.

The Rolla, Missouri Photograph Collection contains copies of photographs and postcard views of Rolla and Phelps County, Missouri, from the family collection of Margaret Isabelle Rauch. Included are views of businesses, public buildings, and street scenes in Rolla, the Phelps County Fairground, and U.S. Highway 66. The photographs have been copied on 35mm black-and-white-film.

The Flat River Woman’s Club Records include microfilm copies of record books, minutes of meetings, a scrapbook, and miscellaneous papers of a woman’s club in St. Francois County, Missouri. The charitable and civic group was begun in 1907 as the Mothers and Patrons Club of Flat River. The club disbanded in 1953.

The Franz Adelmann Records contain a microfilm copy of an account ledger of a general store operated by Franz Adelmann at Salem in Dent County, Missouri. Adelmann, a native of Bavaria, came to Salem, Missouri in 1862 and engaged in the mercantile business until his death in 1875. The ledger is indexed.

The Konenszewski Family Papers contains photocopies of baptismal and educational certificates, medical records, and immigration papers of Johann Konenszewski and his sons, Ladislaus and Edmund. There is also a Civil War letter by Lieutenant Edmund Konenszewski, November 1861, and a diary by Major Ladislaus Konenszewski, February-July 1862. Both men served in the 26th Missouri Infantry in General John Pope’s Army of the Mississippi.

The Miami Club, West Plains, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of a record book and miscellaneous papers of a men’s club in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri, 1901-1909. The volume also includes records of expenses for dances held by the Pickwick Club and the Marquis Orchestra, 1911-1913, and the minutes of meetings of the “Republicans of West Plains,” 1912.

The Picher Lead Company Records contain correspondence and records books of the Picher Lead Company headquartered at Joplin, Missouri. The collection includes correspondence with shipping agents and commission merchants, ledgers of expense and sales, and smelter records. The records span the period from the founding of the company in 1875 to its merger with the Eagle White Lead Company in 1916.

The Lewis Ziegler Records contain a microfilm copy of a daybook from a tavern operated by Lewis Ziegler, or, possibly, Sebastian Ziegler, at Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. Entries begin on April 21, 1839 and continue through July 13, 1841.

The Beaver Creek United Baptist Church Records contain microfilm copies of minutes of meetings and membership records of the Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Phelps County, Missouri. The church was founded in 1866 as Willow Spring Baptist Church, and
was relocated and renamed in 1874.

The J. Pratte and Son Records contain a microfilm copy of a daybook of a dry goods store at Perryville, Perry County, Missouri, operated by Joseph Pratte and his son, Peter R. Pratte. The Prattes dealt primarily in clothing and housewares. An index of the customers is available.

The Bennett Spalding Records contain a microfilm copy of an account ledger of a mercantile operation at Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, thought to have been carried on by Bennett Spalding. The entries begin in April 1850 and end in June 1861. An index to the volume is available.

The Eugene Pernot Medical Records contain a microfilm copy of a daybook of a physician at Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. The daily entries list the patients treated and medicines prescribed from July 1848 through December 1853.

The James S. Spencer Papers contain photocopies and typescript of a Civil War diary of a resident of Phelps County, Missouri, and sergeant in the 32nd Missouri Infantry. The diary covers the period preceding the captures Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the advance on Tuscumbia, Alabama. It also includes a roster of Company I of the 32nd Missouri from June 1863 to May 1864.

The Benton County, Missouri School Records contain a microfilm copy of the records of Kreisel School, which was located southwest of Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri. The records include daily and term attendance records, 1870-1871 and 1885-1956; and the records of the district clerk, 1907-1954.

The Jay Linn Torrey Scrapbook contains materials compiled by Jay Torrey of Howell County, Missouri. A rancher, politician, and Spanish-American War veteran he compiled materials on the Missouri Immigration Society, the State Fruit Experiment Station, the 'Good Roads' movement, relocation of the state capitol, Fruitville Farm, and the proposed village of Torreytown, and the campaign for the United States Senate in 1918.

These are minutes of meetings and membership records of the Beaver Creek Baptist Church in

The Dixon Baptist Association Records contain photocopies of minutes of the tenth annual session of the Dixon Baptist Association. The Association was composed of churches in Phelps, Osage, Maries and Pulaski counties. The tenth annual session was held at the Mount Zion Church in Osage County, October 9-11, 1884.

The Bourbois Baptist Association Records contains photocopies of the annual report of the twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Bourbois Baptist Association. The Association included rural churches in Phelps, Crawford, Maries, and Osage counties. The minutes include statistics from the constituent churches.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Clinton, Missouri Records contain a photocopy of a registrar’s book for the Kate K. Salmon Chapter No. 631 from 1917. The volume contains membership records for the chapter located in Clinton, Missouri.

The Henry County Veterans’ Association Records contain a photocopy of a printed program from the second annual meeting of the Henry County Veterans’ Association. The meeting took place from September 30 to October 2, 1890.

These are records of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic's chapter at Clinton, Henry County, Missouri. The materials include the ritual, secretary's records, reports on the state conventions in 1927 and 1928, and miscellaneous papers.

These are minutes, membership records, and miscellaneous papers of the Grand Army of the
Republic's post at Zalma in Bollinger County, Missouri. The collection also includes general orders
and circulars from the Department of Missouri, and programs and proceedings of the annual state
encampments.

The Hochstatter School, Washington County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of a district clerk’s record book and attendance register for School District No. 3, Hochstatter School in Washington County, Missouri. The rural school district was located south of Potosi.

The Rainwater Family Papers contain photocopies of the Civil War letters of Major Charles C. Rainwater, a Confederate officer, to his wife, Sarah Fowler Rainwater, at Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri. The letters mention fighting at Hartville and Cape Girardeau, and Rainwater’s disabilities from wounds. There are also genealogical data on Samuel Fowler and his family, and biographical sketches of Sarah Fowler Rainwater.

The Rock Springs School, Washington County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the record books of the district clerk of the Rock Springs school district.

The Justice of the Peace, Henry County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of records of cases heard by William B. Means, justice of the peace at Clinton, Henry County, Missouri.

The Koehler and Jorn Families Papers contain a microfilm copy of the correspondence, biographical materials, and personal papers of Emma Koehler and Charles G. Jorn of Naylor, Ripley County, Missouri. The correspondence, mostly in German, was received from relatives and friends in southern Illinois coal mining towns and from relatives in Bad Tennstedt, Germany.

The Iberia Junior College Collection contains bulletins of the Iberia Academy and Iberia Junior College in Miller County, Missouri. There is also a history of the town of Iberia, the Academy and the College by William F. Jones.

The Cave Spring Association of the Freewill Baptist Churches Records contain photocopies of the minutes of the forty-second annual session of the Association, held in August 1929 near Alton, Missouri.

The Wright County Baptist Association Records contain the printed reports of the annual sessions of the Wright County Baptist Association. The reports include meeting minutes, statistical information on member churches, and reports on finances, missions, and church-sponsored programs.

The Potosi, Missouri Photograph Collection contains 35mm black and white negative copies of photographs of prominent citizens, commercial buildings, and street scenes in Potosi, Washington County, Missouri.

The Cane Creek Baptist Association Records contain the booklets with the proceedings of the 42nd, 91st, and 130th annual meetings of the Cane Creek Baptist Association. Included in the booklets are the articles of faith and constitution, minutes, committee reports, and directories of churches and staff.

The Clarence Boyce Wright Papers contain microfilm copies of the diaries of Clarence Boyce Wright, a native of Tuscumbia, Miller County, Missouri, and an employee of Anchor Milling Company. Wright worked in the mill at Tuscumbia and as a clerk aboard the company towboat Ruth. The diary entries note events in Miller County and along the Osage River, weather and river conditions, and the milling company business.

The Dora Pelagie Rozier Sheet Music Collection contains microfilm copies of sheet music for piano and Spanish guitar college by Dora Pelagie Rozier and Emily Pelagie Janis Rozier of Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. Included are four musical periodicals and a handwritten transcription by Marie Zoe Vallé Rozier.

These are papers of Dr. James McComb, an early physician of Laclede County, Missouri. The papers include medical notebooks and treatment records, Civil War papers, McComb's autobiography, and family correspondence following his death.

The Berry Family Papers contain the photocopies and original papers of the Berry family of Maries and Osage counties in Missouri. They include correspondence from family members in California, Missouri and Tennessee, tax receipts, promissory notes, and land records.

The Doe Run Photograph Collection contains two photographs of businesses in Doe Run, Saint Francois County, Missouri. Included are exterior views of the office of the Doe Run Lumber Company, and the general store of Meyer and Gruner. The views have been copied on 35 mm film slides.

The Moothart College Photograph Collection contains a photograph of the football team of Moothart College in Farmington, Missouri. The view has been copied on one 35mm slide.

The Saint Francois County, Missouri Collection contains obituaries, wedding announcements, anniversary notices, and miscellaneous biographical material clipped from Saint Francois County newspapers.

The Casper Shell Papers contain the journal and personal papers of Casper Shell Jr., a blacksmith and justice of the peace who lived near Lutesville in what was then Cape Girardeau County, now Bollinger County, Missouri. The collection pertains to Shell’s trade as a blacksmith as well as his official duties. A transcript, prepared by the donor, is available.

The George Clinton Arthur Papers contain the reminiscences and personal papers assembled in connection with George C. Arthur’s work on “Bushwhacker” Bill Wilson during the Civil War in Phelps County, Missouri. There is also genealogical information concerning the Arthur and Turnure families, and correspondence regarding Arthur’s books, Backwoodsmen and Bushwhacker.

The John B. Mains Papers contain photocopies of Civil War letters written by John B. Mains who served in the 6th Missouri Infantry. Mains wrote from camps in Missouri while he served in John C. Fremont’s Army of the West, and from Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama during service with the Army of the Tennessee.

These are papers of the Evans and Tolman families of Farmington, Missouri, mostly of Dr. William
L. Tolman and his wife, Margaret Frances "Fanny" Evans (1840-1921). Included are letters
from relatives in California and Colorado, a file of letters from Civil War veterans seeking invalid
pensions, and a collection of stories concerning the early settlers of St. Francois County.

The Henry Ellison Skaggs Papers contains the diary and papers of Henry Ellison Skaggs, pertaining to his service in the 1st Missouri Cavalry in Missouri and Arkansas during the Civil War. Included are a diary, two letters from Little Rock, Arkansas, a photograph of Skaggs in uniform, and a group of prayers. There are also correspondence concerning his military pension and genealogical data.

The Saint Francois County, Missouri Booklet contains “A Message to the Homeseeker,” a booklet advertising the towns of Bonne Terre, Farmington, and Flat River in Saint Francois County and Fredericktown in Madison County, Missouri. There are descriptions of 157 business and illustrations of 85 commercial establishments, public buildings, and churches in those communities.

The James S. Rogers Papers contain photocopies of the Civil War diary and letters of James S. Rogers, a resident of Corydon, Iowa, and member of Company M. of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. The diary and letters cover his departure from home, enlistment and training at Davenport, Iowa, and cavalry service in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.

These are business records of a manufacturing firm in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri, now doing business as Leggett & Platt, Inc. Included are shipping and sales records, journals, expense records, balance sheets, and account ledgers.

This collection includes correspondence, business records, and legal papers, and genealogical information pertaining to two early families of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The Ellis family came from Georgia about 1805; the Ranneys from Indiana about 1825. Other names represented in the collection are Beckham, Cobb, Giboney, Ogle, Waters, and Wathen (Warthen-Worthan).

These are scrapbooks, miscellaneous papers, and photographs of the Nelson family of Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri. Absolom, Arthur T., and Frank R. Nelson operated a commercial apple orchard and a tavern and motel along Uunited States Highway 66. Arthur T. Nelson served on various Missouri state commissions and boards. The photographs in the collection have been copied on 35mm negatives and slides.

The Cole Camp High School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain the records of Cole Camp High School at Cole Camp in Benton County, Missouri. Included are records of the district clerk, 1870-1910, and daily and term attendance records kept by teachers, 1870-1884 and 1898-1901.

The Mora School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records of Mora School in northern Benton County, Missouri. Included are the records of the district clerk and attendance records kept by the teachers.

The Cole Camp Public School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records of the Cole Camp Public School at Cole Camp, Missouri. Included are records of the district clerk and daily and term attendance records kept by teachers.

The Chapman School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a record book of Chapman School in central Benton County, Missouri. The volume includes daily and term attendance records kept by teachers.

The Ionia School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain microfilm copy of records from the Ionia School in northern Benton County, Missouri. Included are records of the district clerk and daily and term attendance records kept by teachers.

The Prairie Grove School, Pettis County, Missouri Records contain microfilm copy of daily and term attendance records of Prairie Grove School in southern Pettis County, Missouri. Included are records for 1910-1914 and 1952-1961.

The South Side, Pettis County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the daily and term attendance records of South Side School in southern Pettis County, Missouri. Included are records for 1914-1917 and 1955-1958.

The Walnut School, Pettis County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records of the district clerk of Walnut School in southern Pettis County, Missouri. With the exception of 1963 to 1964 the records are complete for the period 1906 to 1966.

The Rocky Ridge School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records for the Rocky Ridge School, School District No. 27.

The Fordney School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records for the Fordney School, School District No. 28 located in northeast Benton County, Missouri.

The Balke Prairie School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the records of Balke Prairie School, School District No. 32. The records include daily and term attendance.

The Ross Creek School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the attendance records for Ross Creek School, School District No. 34.

The Edmonson School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the attendance records for the Edmonson School, School District No. 36 in Benton County, Missouri.

The Lake Creek School, Benton County, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of the daily and term attendance records and district clerk records for Lake Creek School, School District No. 1.

The Bird’s Warehouse Records contain a microfilm copy of an account ledger of a freight warehouse, steamboat landing, and general merchandise business operated by the Bird family at the confluence of the Mississippi River and Ohio River. The warehouse was located at Bird’s Point, Mississippi County, Missouri or at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois. An index to the accounts is available.

The Thomas Akers Barr Papers contain a microfilm copy of correspondence and personal papers belonging to Thomas Akers Barr, a native of Illinois and physician who started his practice in Lebanon, Missouri, around 1869. The papers include letters from Illinois soldiers serving in Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina during the Civil War. Also included are letters from physicians in Illinois and Missouri and from Harry Woodson Barr while he was at Camp Bowie, Texas, in 1918-1919.

The Washington County, Missouri Tax Assessment Records contains a microfilm copy of a volume that is a record of assessments on personal property in Belleview and Union townships in Washington County, Missouri. Real estate, slaves, cash, and miscellaneous property are listed. An index is available.

The Missouri Infantry Regiment, Phelps’s Quartermaster Records contain a microfilm copy of the accounts kept by Lieutenant Robert B. Owens, quartermaster for the Phelps’s Regiment while stationed at Rolla, Lebanon, and Springfield, Missouri in 1862. The accounts include records of receipt and issue of food, forage, clothing and camp equipage, lists of civilians employed by the army, and notes on wagon trains in quartermaster service.

The United Confederate Veterans, Springfield, Missouri Records contain a microfilm copy of records of the United Confederate Veterans Campbell Camp No. 488 located in Springfield, Missouri. The records, dating from 1903 to 1919 contain meeting minutes, membership and visitor rosters, and other organizational records.

The Lyman G. Bennett Collection contains photocopies and original diaries and topographic maps of a civil engineer, member of the 36th Illinois Infantry, and civilian employee of the U. S. Army. The materials concern homesteading in Minnesota in 1857; campaigning in Missouri and Arkansas with the Army of Southwest Missouri, 1861-1862; mapping in Kansas and Colorado in 1865; and the Powder River Indian Expedition in Nebraska and Wyoming in 1865.

The L. L. Wittich, “Joplin News Herald’s Zinc and Lead Handbook” Collection contains a pamphlet concerning the zinc and lead industries and mineral production in the Joplin District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Included are production figures for mines and mining companies in the Joplin District, and statistics on the international production, pricing, and consumption of zinc and lead.

These are letters to Thomas B. Whitledge, an attorney and politician in St. Marys, Sainte Genevieve County, Missouri. Correspondents include Edward A. Rozier, Benjamin B. Cahoon, and Richard C. Kerens. Subjects include levee districts, railroads, oil exploration, and the Republican Party. Topics in the latter category include patronage, religious toleration, and the Taft/Roosevelt split of 1912.

The Phelps County, Missouri Financial Statement contains a pamphlet with an itemized account of the financial affairs of Phelps County, Missouri prepared by Frank A. Germann, county clerk. The statement was published as a supplement to the Rolla Herald on April 9, 1914 and includes advertisements by local businesses.

The Benton County Medical Society Records contain a photocopied volume that includes a roster of members, financial records, and meeting minutes of the Benton County Medical Society. Also included are several applications for membership. The records date from 1915 to 1954.

The Ozark Land and Lumber Company Photograph Collection contains images of the Ozark Land and Lumber Company at Fishertown, Shannon County, Missouri. Included are views of the mills, dry kiln, machine shop, lumber yard, employees, and the lumber company’s band. The views are from the collection of Lon Hogan of Winona, Missouri.

The Joseph Ashcroft Papers contain photocopied records of a manufacturer of wooden spokes for wheels in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri. Included are a letter from the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company concerning the spoke business, letters from R. M. Good of the School of the Ozarks, and an address delivered to a trade association meeting in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Cedar County, Missouri Photograph Collection contains copied photographs of the Messick and H. W. Evans general stores, Cedar Springs Band, a picnic of Camp 171 of the Woodmen of the World at Cedar Springs, and a view of the Balm baseball team.

The Little Piney Association of Regular Predestinarian Baptists Records contain minutes of annual meetings of the Little Piney Association, which was composed of churches in Camden, Cole, Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Miller, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski, Shannon, and Texas counties in Missouri. At various times, the organization was titled a “United” and “Primitive” Baptist association.

The Lamine River Association of Regular Predestinarian Baptists Records contain the original and photocopied printed annual meeting minutes of the Lamine River Association, dated from 1845 to 1859 and 1877 to 1882. Known first as the Lamine River Regular Baptists Association, the organization was composed of churches in Bates, Camden, Cooper, Jackson, Johnson, Miller, Morgan, and Pettis counties in Missouri.

The Osage River Association of Regular Baptists Records contain meeting minutes of the Osage River Association from 1847. The Association was composed of Baptist churches in Benton, Camden, Polk, and Webster counties.

The Osage River Association of United Baptists Records contain minutes of the fifth annual meeting of the Osage River Association, which was composed of United Baptist churches in Camden, Maries, Miller, and Morgan counties in Missouri. Included are membership statistics, summary of the Association’s business, report on evangelical work, and circular letter urging adequate financial support of the ministry.

The Union Association of Regular Predestinarian Baptists Records contain the minutes of the eighth annual meeting of the Union Association, which was composed of Regular Baptist churches in Ozark County, Missouri, and Fulton and Marion counties in Arkansas. The minutes include the constitution, articles of faith, rules of decorum, and membership statistics.

The Bethel Association of Regular Baptists Records contain the minutes of the twenty-second annual meeting of the Bethel Association, which was composed of Regular Baptist churches in Franklin, Jefferson, Perry, Union, and Williamson counties in Illinois. The minutes include membership statistics and a summary of business taken up at the annual meeting.

The Allen Bolles Johnson Papers contain typescript and photocopies of letters written by Allen B. Johnson from Rolla and St. Louis, Missouri during the American Civil War. A native of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, his letters include descriptions of rail travel from Birmingham, New York to Missouri, the controversy over secession at Rolla, and the Camp Jackson affair and civil unrest in St. Louis.

This collection consists of correspondence and business papers of the Gideon-Anderson Lumber
& Mercantile Company concerning the lumber trade in southeastern Missouri and northeastern
Arkansas. Based in Gideon, Missouri, the company operated primarily in Dunklin, New Madrid,
and Pemiscot counties in Missouri. The collection includes papers from two subsidiary operations,
the Gideon Cooperage Company and the Gideon & North Island Railroad Company.

These are minutes of meetings, scrapbooks, and yearbooks of the Noah Coleman Chapter of the
DAR. Members from Phelps County organized the chapter at Rolla in 1909.

These are minutes of meetings of a businessmen's association at Granby in Newton County,
Missouri. Included are minutes from 6 July 1933 through 26 November 1934.

The 2nd Illinois Artillery Regiment, Battery F Records contains a photocopy of the final muster roll and service history of the Battery F, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. The battery was organized in Cape Girardeau, Scott, and Stoddard counties in Missouri.

These are newspaper clippings, correspondence, miscellaneous papers, and photographs pertaining
to the tenure of Harris Rodgers as chairman of the Missouri State Highway Commission. A
native of Scott County, Missouri, Rodgers served from 1949 to 1957

These are records of the Presbyterian Church at Ironton in Iron County, Missouri, which was
organized as part of the Potosi Presbytery in 1855. The records include minutes of meetings of the
church Session, the Board of Trustees, and the congregation, registers of membership, and records of
the women's auxiliary societies.

This collection includes a cash book, minutes of meetings, yearbooks, and miscellaneous papers
of a women's club in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri. Organized in 1919, the club disbanded in
1976.
