McManaway writes about his friends, neighbors, and people from church, as well as makes notes on the weather, gardening, and daily activities. He lived with his sister Maggie, who is mentioned often. McManaway also intersperses his journal entries with repeatedly copied quotes, aphorisms, and verses, such as "The good fairy can not beat this," "Who runs may read," and "Cleanliness is next to godliness," among many others. It is unclear whether these lines and phrases are penmanship exercises or if they were used as a means of self-improvement. |
