Columbia Manuscript Collections

The University of Missouri School of Journalism awards honor medals to the school's outstanding journalists.The collection contains oral history interviews conducted with thehonor medalists bygraduate students from the school. Included are transcripts, supporting material, audio, and video.

Professional papers of the journalist and director of the Western Kentucky University School of Journalism and Broadcasting. Includes correspondence, photographs, programs, newspaper clippings, class evaluations, journalism education materials, newsletters, and material on first amendment issues (flag burning, freedom of speech, freedom of information), and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Betsy Wade wrote a travel column for The New York Times, was head of the Times foreign copy desk during the Vietnam War, and an editor of the Pentagon Papers. The collection largely concerns the Journalism and Women Symposium. Correspondence, newsletters, and audio cassettes are also included.

Founded in 1995, the records of a chapter of the Missouri Writers Guild contain essays, poetry, prose, authors' bios, and meeting minutes.

Papers of Leon Burgoyne and his daughter, Suzanne. Leon was a Navy aviator during World War II and coached boys' basketball in Berrien, Michigan. Suzanne was a professor of Theatre Arts at Creighton University and the University of Missouri. The papers include correspondence from World War II and the Vietnam War, in which Suzanne's ex-husband served, and materials documenting Suzanne's teaching career.

Papers of a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and journalism educator who worked for several Midwest and Pacific Northwest newspapers. Includes articles, research materials, interview notes, correspondence, and datebooks.

Records of a nonprofit organization advocating scenic conservation in Missouri. The group conducted "Save Our Scenery" initiative-petition drives and placed a statewide vote on billboard control on the November 2000 ballot. The measure lost 51 to 49 percent. Contains correspondence, financial records, publicity materials, photographs and slides, and audiovisual materials.

Fiddle recordings, songbooks, and other materials of a harmonica player and music collector from Columbia, Missouri.

Manuscripts, publications, and personal papers of an author and first Poet Laureate of Missouri (2008-2010).

Correspondence of the Bealmear Family, members of whom settled in Kentucky, Arkansas, and the Missouri counties of Boone, Howard, and Macon. The letters describe farming, illnesses, and other family matters during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. An account book, dictionary, and handbook are included.

Records of the Missouri lodges of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Assembly. Included are account books, minutes, annual membership and financial reports, encampments reports, petitions submitted to the state Grand Lodge, and publications about the organizations. Papers of a wildlife scientist whose studies focused on water quality in Missouri. Whitley worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation in the water quality branch of the fisheries research section and published many articles, most notably, "Water Plants for Missouri Ponds."

Official records and other materials of a nonprofit organization founded in Columbia, Missouri in 1959 and dedicated to the encouragement and support of active community participation in the creation and appreciation of the visual arts.

Papers of a journalist who reported eyewitness dispatches of the terrorist attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001, for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Includes her memoir, “9/11 Remembered: A Personal Account;” hand-written reporter’s notes; copies of her published stories; photographs; correspondence; awards she received from the Milwaukee Press Club for the coverage; and other items.

Personal papers and genealogical research of a Sedalia, Missouri, native. Contains publications and research files pertaining to the Drake, Dodson, and other families of Missouri. Includes correspondence, photographs, and official records.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest academic honorary society for general education in the United States. The Alpha of Missouri Chapter was founded in 1901. The records include correspondence, membership lists, speeches, and information about the chapter's history.

Papers of a psychiatrist and author best known for his work in cultural psychiatry, nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), and religion. A Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Favazza began teaching at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1973.

Records of a volunteer group dedicated to presenting and preserving high-quality symphonic music. Includes organizational records, publications, and audio recordings of performances.

Four-Minute Men was a volunteer organization created by the U.S. Committee on Public Information and endorsed by President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. Orators delivered brief speeches on specified topics to "ready-made" audiences in theaters and other venues. The propaganda campaign served to solicit support for the war. L.L. [Loyal Lovejoy] Leonard of St. Louis was the State Director for Missouri. The collection includes national and state materials.

Genealogy and other family history materials, both printed and video, from the Howell, Holden, Shutt, and Sandifer families, of Dallas, Jackson, Cass, and Lafayette Counties, Missouri. The collection also includes the Margie Ellis Howell Papers, a collection acquired by Copus after Howell's death. These papers include information on the Ellis, Howell, Parkes, Perry, and Hammonds families of Missouri.

Scrapbook of clippings, correspondence, and miscellanea related to Blackburn and Saline County, Missouri.

The papers of long-time editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch include correspondence, sketch books, reprints of cartoons, and miscellaneous material.

Magazines, conference minutes, booklets, literature, educational material, manuals, reports, catalogs, notebooks, yearbooks, statistics, and audiovisual material of the Church of the Brethren, founded in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany, now with members throughout North America and the world.

The collection includes newspaper clippings mostly from Missouri newspapers regarding all aspects of the abortion issue in America, including politics, protests, sexual health, women's health, legislation, Supreme Court cases, population control, and birth control. Also included is a small amount of printed material and informational posters on the AIDS crisis.

The John C. F. Tedrow Papers includes his research, writings, and correspondence regarding the history of soil sciences in America while working as a professor in the Soils Department at Rutgers University. The bulk of the papers include information on the soils of New Jersey and the arctic region.

Personal papers of Bruce D. Boling, Ph.D. Includes photographs, correspondence, certificates and diplomas, and some information regarding his involvement in the El Kahir Shriners in Iowa.

The records of Calvary Lutheran Church of Columbia, Missouri, include meeting minutes, legal papers, newsletters, church bulletins, a parish register, and other miscellaneous material.

Materials collected by Lyn Wolz surrounding the Chez Coffeehouse reunion in 2006 include a binder with publications, articles about the coffeehouse, photographs, and reminiscences. Also included are computer discs with photographs, audio remembrances, and audio from the 2006 concert, as well as two copies of "Joint Effort," an album created by patrons of the Chez in 1969.

Papers of an author and journalist who worked for the News and Citizen and The Transcript, both of Morrisville, Vermont, contain reporter's notebooks, copies of award plaques, and newspapers.

Reports, correspondence, minutes, sponsored events, photographs, and miscellaneous material of the Boonslick Kiwanis Club, Columbia, Missouri, a civic service club which operated both locally and internationally. Also included is an oral history interview (with transcription) of Raymond W. Lansford, World War II veteran, a professor of finance at the University of Missouri and former treasurer, world president, and member of the Kiwanis International Board of Directors.

The papers of a professor of economics at the University of Missouri from 1961 to 1985 include digital copies of correspondence from students and administrators, news articles, a lecture, and miscellaneous documents, as well as a reminiscence of his teaching career.

Collection of largely unidentified cabinet cards from the Jefferson City and St. Louis, Missouri, areas, circa 1890s. It is unclear if this is a family photograph album or was compiled by a photographer. Only two baby photographs have been identified, those of Daniel Gundelfinger and Harold Singer.

The Carter-Hickman Family Papers document the lives of William Ray Carter, associate professor at the University of Missouri, and his wife Helen Hickman. Together they had three children, Robin, William, and Lyda, and lived in Columbia, Missouri.

The collection consists of oral history interviews conducted by Meredith Ludwig for the Boonville Women's Club, including audio and transcripts. Ludwig compiled many of the interviews into a 2008 readers' theatre production, "Women's Words: Memories of Boonslick," and supporting material relating to the stage production is also included.

Oral history interview conducted with Liz Schmidt by Doug Hunt concerning her activism in Columbia, Missouri, during the 1960s. Collection contains audio only.

The records of an organization devoted to developing and promoting adult and family literacy resources include meeting minutes, reports, newsletters, publications, and miscellaneous administrative material. The organization ceased operation in 2012 after more than twenty years of providing training programs and technical assistance throughout Missouri.

World War I service record cards for soldiers from Vernon County, Missouri.

Records of the organization include home surveys and photographs of urban renewal areas, disposition of properties, HUD board minutes, hearings, retreats, audio cassettes, newspaper clippings, and correspondence.

Records of the railroad largely consist of field books containing survey information. Also includes valuation notes.

The papers of Larry Hackman, an archivist who served as director of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum from 1995 to 2000, include biographical information and material concerning Hackman's consulting work for the Missouri State Archives and the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board. Also included is material concerning Thomas F. Eagleton and their personal and professional work together on various projects.

The papers of a journalist who spent most of his career at UPI include story files, clippings, article drafts, correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous personal and professional material. Quigg, a native of Boonville, Missouri, graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1934.

Records of the organization consist of correspondence, minutes, treasurer's files, and miscellaneous material of past presidents and council members.

Project and paper on history of housing in Overton, Missouri, done by a University of Missouri student for a class. Also includes photographs and negatives of Overton, Missouri.

Diaries kept by Lillian Bradford Dowler, a farm wife who grew up and lived in the Birch Tree community area in Shannon County, Missouri, her whole life. The diaries date from 1928 to 1995 and document family life and daily activities on the farm. Collection also includes transcriptions.

Papers of a University of Missouri School of Journalism graduate who spent much of her career working for NBC's Meet the Press from 1956-1998. She held several positions at Meet the Press and retired from the show as executive producer.

Collection of folklore oral histories done by students of MU English instructor Raymond Summerville includes transcripts and audio of oral history interviews. Also included in the collection is an ethnography of the Broadway Diner, Columbia, MO.

Papers contain material pertaining to Schroeder's work with Missouri place name surveys involving Adolph E. Schroeder and Don Lance, as well as the founding of the Missouri Board of Geographic Names.

Papers of an employee of Service Pipeline Company from Odessa and Carrollton, Missouri, largely consist of personal account ledgers detailing daily expenses. Also included is a small amount of Service Pipeline and Standard Oil material and miscellaneous material.
