Saint Louis Manuscript Collections

The Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis Records contains correspondence, meeting minutes, news releases, reports, and photographs pertaining to its mission to support and fund cultural and educational organizations in the St. Louis area. The materials in this collection date from 1960 to 2006.

The Association of St. Louis Area Archivists Records contains meeting minutes, bylaws, correspondence, annual reports, financial records, membership surveys, and newsletters relating to the organization's mission to promote cooperation among archival professionals in the bi-state region and disseminate archival best practices through workshops and educational programs. The topics covered in this collection include the organization’s programming, design, and dissemination of membership surveys; hosting archival education workshops; developing new membership packets and brochures; and the Midwest Archives Conference held in St. Louis in 1981.

The papers of Harry Edward Berndt (1926- ), a former sociology professor at St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley, and executive director of Metro Housing Resources, a housing advocacy agency for low-income and minority individuals. The materials consist of correspondence, research articles, essays, and working and subject files, documenting his research interests in urban sociology, intercultural and interracial relations, and organizational analysis. Other items of interest include drafts and correspondence of his books New Rules in the Ghetto: Community Development and Urban Poverty (1977) and Only a Priest (2010), a biography of Monsignor John Alexander Shocklee, a civil rights and labor activist.

The papers of Susan Block contain correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and legal materials chronicling Block's career as a St. Louis County Circuit Judge and advocacy for children.

The Eugene Buder Papers contain subject files, newspaper clippings, and publications documenting Buder's involvement in St. Louis-area civic affairs, including his interests in police reform, the unification of St. Louis City and County, and the development of the St. Louis County parks department. Buder's papers also chronicle his efforts as an attorney to defend individuals against charges of supporting communism.

The papers of John Burgard contain meeting minutes, agendas, and a handbook documenting St. Louis area political campaigns and the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

Burgess worked as an education writer for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. He collected many documents on school desegregation in St. Louis. The collection includes the most significant federal court cases and notable dissertations on the topic.

This collection contains records that Union Electric was required to make available for citizen scrutiny during the application, construction, and operating of the nuclear power plant. The materials in this collection include safety and construction reports, emergency plans, and inspection reports.

The records of Choose Environmental Excellence, Gateway Region contain correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and proposals, relating to the group's mission to organize a partnership of business, government, and private citizens to improve environmental awareness and actions in the daily choices that individuals and institutions in the Gateway Region make.

Citizens for Missouri's Children is a nonprofit organization established in St. Louis in 1983 whose mission involves advocating for the rights and well-being of all Missouri children, providing information and resources on health care, education, child protection, and legal services. The materials in this collection include meeting minutes, reports, publicity materials, and newsletters.

The records of the Communication Workers of American contain Grievance files, correspondence, contract books, and arbitration awards pertaining to the union's mission to advocate workers in the telecommunications and information technology industries.

This collection consists of interviews Nan Sweet conducted with four politically active members of the St. Louis lesbian community, including Georgia King and Laura Ann Moore.

The records of Confluence St. Louis contain meeting minutes, reports, long-range plans, newsletters, cassettes, and oral history consent forms, documenting the organization's mission to promote civic cooperation in the St. Louis region.

The papers of Patricia Corrigan consist of scrapbooks containing newspaper articles Corrigan wrote as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (1982-2002). Also included in the collection are books Corrigan wrote on St. Louis's culture and history, including Eating St. Louis: The Gateway City's Unique Food Culture and Wild Things: Untold Tales from the First Century of the St. Louis Zoo.

This collection contains correspondence, press releases, grant applications, newspaper clippings, and publications of a women's volunteer support group for law enforcement agencies.

The Thomas B. Curtis Papers contain correspondence, notebooks, photographs, newspaper clippings, and legislative materials pertaining to Curtis’s career as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Missouri’s 12th and 2nd districts from 1951 to 1969. The collection also contains materials chronicling Curtis’s time as general counsel and vice president for Encyclopedia Britannica from 1969 to 1973.

This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, newspaper clippings, articles, photographs, and audio recordings. The materials in this collection document Teresa Gallagher’s involvement with the Thomas A. Dooley Foundation, the Tom Dooley Heritage, Inc., and other organizations and people who worked to continue Dr. Tom Dooley’s mission to provide medical care to developing nations. The collection also includes information regarding Gallagher’s book Give Joy to My Youth: A Memoir of Dr. Tom Dooley.

This collection consists of newspaper clippings about Kay Drey's Family, as well as nuclear power and the Meramec River.

The records of the Leo Drey Gree Springs Campaign contain appraisals, legislative materials, correspondence, maps, and photographs regarding Drey's efforts to make Greer Spring a part of the Mark Twain National Forest.

The papers of James F. Gamble consists of correspondence, memos, reports, and meeting minutes pertaining to his career as a lawyer, conservationist, and executive director of the Meramec River Basin Association.

This collection contains two 4x5 copy negatives: the Comet at Forest Park Highlands and The "Flying Turns" (The Bob Sled); one 5x6 BW print of "The Flying Turns"; One 4.5x6 BW copy print, aerial view of Westlake Park; and one 5x7 BW print of Scenic Railway at Forest Park Highlands.

This collection contains pamphlets published by the William Simmons Service Bulletin that focused on the global events that took place after the end of World War I in 1918. In addition, the collection contains a photocopied map of the St. Charles, Missouri Waterfront.

The papers of Lewis C. Green contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, depositions, and related legal materials pertaining to Green’s career as an environmental litigator. Working in conjunction with the Coalition for the Environment and the Sierra Club, Green was instrumental in preventing flood plain development in Missouri and ensuring that the Environmental Protection Agency enforced clean air standards. Green was active in the environmental movement from the 1960s until he died in 2003.

The papers of Robert Griesedieck contain meeting minutes, reports, rosters, and newspaper clippings chronicling his involvement in St. Louis organizations, including the St. Louis Ambassadors, The Missississippi River Tricentennial Committee, and the Bicentennial celebration in St. Louis.

The Evlewt Groene collection consists of two scrapbooks documenting her student career and activities at Kirkwood High School.

This collection primarily consists of reports on St. Louis area hospitals and medical care.

The Heaney Desegregation Collection contains oral history interviews, newspaper articles, reports, and court files Gerald William Heaney used for his book, "Unending Struggle: The Long Road to an Equal Education in St. Louis."

This collection consists of materials Elijah Lovejoy, as well as non-related publications and booklets, including an oversize poster for $190 real estate lots "out in the hills along Page Bld."

The Higher Education Consortium (HEC) of Metropolitan St. Louis Records contains meeting minutes, correspondence, agendas, and reports pertaining to HEC's mission to encourage cooperation among universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher learning in the St. Louis region.

The Joan Kelly Horn Papers contain appointment books, subjects files, legislative materials, photographs, newspaper clippings, and videotapes pertaining to Horn's single term as a United States Representative for the 2nd Congressional District of Missouri. Topics of interest include Times Beach and Weldon Spring, campaign finance reform, Lambert Airport, and the St. Louis County Election Board. The materials in this collection date from 1991 to 1992.

The Human Resources Development Institute Records contain administrative files, reports, and seminar materials. The materials in this collection date from 1979 to 1986.

This collection consists of papers and photographs of Mathew Irwin, primarily documenting his ancestors—the Storch, Wuellner, and Slavik families. The Storch and Wuellner branches immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, from Germany and Bohemia in 1838 and settled in the St. Louis area. After their settlement in St. Louis, Magnus Storch (1825-1900) and his wife, Elizabeta Steibert (1843-1896), had Louisa Storch (1870-1934). On April 6, 1893, Louisa Storch married George Friederich Wuellner (1864-1955); their union produced Talitha Wuellner (1895-1955). Talitha subsequently married Albert Slavik (1891-1939) on April 10, 1917, which led to the birth of Marjorie Louisa Slavik (1918-1997). Marjorie married Russell Ewing Irwin (1912-1984) in 1940. From this union came Karin Louise Irwin, who had Mathew S. Irwin and Samuel White Swan-Perkins.

Subject files from a St. Louis activist. Topics of interest include nuclear disarmament, anarchists, and labor unions.

The Alfred Kahn Papers contain correspondence, audio cassette tapes, press releases, and conference materials pertaining to Kahn's career as an African-American environmental activist in the St. Louis region. The materials in the collection reflect Kahn's interest in urban zoning and regional planning. Other topics of interest include materials on the St. Louis Committee for Black Survival, an African American activist group concerned with the urban environment.

The Ruth Keeling papers contain correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and newsletters pertaining to Keeling's involvement with the Missouri National Education Association and the Normandy Teachers Association.

The Wayne Coburn Kennedy Papers contains photographs and subject files relating to Kennedy's tenure as director of the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation from 1962 to 1991. Materials of interest include files on planning for parks in Creve Coeur, Spanish Lake Park, and historic sites surveys.

The Ed Golterman Papers contain "Assaults on the Kiel," a work on two diskettes concerning the history of the Kiel Opera House. Included in this accession is a 58-page booklet called, "Saving Kiel," by Ed Golterman.

The Gerald and Annora Koetting Papers contain correspondence, conference materials, photographs, surveys, and newsletters pertaining to Gerald and Annora Koetting's involvement with the St. Louis chapter of the American Marketing Association.

This collection contains video recordings of "Laborvision," a public access television series produced by the Missouri Progressive Vote Coalition. The show focused on labor issues affecting Missouri workers.

This collection primarily contains copies of Marquis, a newspaper produced by residents of Lafayette Square.

The Jay Landesman and Vincent Livelli correspondence consist of letters to Jay Landesman from Vincent Livelli. Also included in the collection is a songbook titled "Fran Landesman and Simon Wallace."

This collection contains research Charles L. Leven conducted for St. Louis County Schools to assess the Economic Impact of Desegregation. The materials in this collection include maps, statistics, and legal materials.

This collection contains civil and criminal case files of Stephen Limbaugh, Sr., who served as a United States District Judge for the Eastern and Western Districts of Missouri from 1983 to 2008.

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks related to the organization's mission to provide outdoor concerts for music lovers.

The Sheila Lump Papers contain speeches, legislation, photographs, and cassette tapes relating to her career as a Missouri State Representative and Public Service Commission Chair. Subjects of interest include abortion, pay equity, redistricting, and privacy.

The D.B. Maybry Papers consist of correspondence, memos, photographs, and promotional materials pertaining to Maybry's employment with the T.J. Moss Tie Company.

The papers of Thomas F. McDonald contain correspondence, yearbook pages, and personal papers pertaining to McDonald's law career and presidency of the St. Louis Bar Association.

Theodore McMillian was the first African American to serve on the Missouri Court of Appeals, and the first African American to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Collection includes Federal Judicial Ceneter Media Library audio cassettes; Committee on Tribal Justice files and old speeches; and two books.

The Edwin B. Meissner Records contain correspondence, books, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and a videotape focusing on the history of race relations in St. Louis from 1944 to 1998. The majority of the materials focus on Meissner’s efforts to improve race relations in St. Louis as the chairperson of the St. Louis Race Relations Commission.

The Midwest Coalition for Responsible Investment (MCRI) Records contain correspondence, meeting minutes, studies, and subject files on genetically modified organisms, Monsanto, Boeing, and nuclear power. MCRI is a St. Louis area faith-based organization dedicated to investing in major corporations and using their power as shareholders to influence companies to become more socially responsible and transparent.

The Missouri Humanities Council Records contains grant proposals, evaluations, development meeting minutes, program guidelines, reports, and newsletters pertaining to the group’s mission to assist libraries, museums, and other organizations in promoting educational programs focusing on history, law, ethics, philosophy, and anthropology. The majority of the collection contains grant proposals submitted to the Missouri Humanities Council by various organizations in Missouri; the grant proposal files include the proposals, correspondence, and program evaluations. The Missouri Humanities Council was founded in 1971 and is affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has offices in Kansas City and St. Louis. The materials in this collection date from 1971 to 2020.

The Missouri Parks Association Records (MPA) contain correspondence, legal materials, board meeting minutes, publications, newsletters, and reports relating to the organization’s mission to protect, enhance, and preserve Missouri state parks and historic sites. Included in the collection is MPA’s serial publication The Heritage. The bulk of this collection includes correspondence to and from board members as well as Missouri’s political figures including former Missouri governors, senators, and attorney general. These individuals include John Ashcroft, Mel Carnahan, and Kit Bond. Additionally, these records contain the National Park Services’ National Register of Historic Places – Nomination Forms for architectural sites in Missouri state parks that hold historical significance, such as bridges, lodges, and cabins. 

This collection contains newsletters and board of directors files of the Missouri Women's Network, which seeks to provide women in business with networking opportunities.

This collection contains Initiative petitions, correspondence, and legal materials of a group organized to institute a voluntary check-off on local utility bills to fund a board allowing consumers to contribute to rate hike decisions.

This collection contains mounted photographs, 4x5 negatives, thirty-five-millimeter negatives, and one 3.5 micro floppy disk pertaining to 'Mit Feder und Hammer? (With Feather and Hammer): The German Experience in St. Louis," an exhibit held in St. Louis in 1983 and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) from 1984 to 1989.

This collection contains videotapes on the St. Louis Zoo, Kirkwood, and the St. Louis Art Museum, collected by Ann Morris, the former Associate Director of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-St. Louis.

This collection contains two ledgers consisting of financial records of the Mound City Commercial College. Thomas A. Rice founded the Mound City Commercial College in 1859 in Boone County, Missouri.

This collection contains an oral history interview of Helen Nash, MD, interviewed by Marion Hunt, on April 20, 1999. Nash was a pediatrician who worked at Homer G. Phillips Hospital and the Saint Louis Children's Hospital. She was best known for providing youth with sex education and reducing instances of infant deaths at Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

The Natural Streams Campaign records contain correspondence, petitions, newspaper clippings, and surveys documenting the group's efforts to pass the Missouri Natural Streams Act of 1990 through a petition; had the petition succeeded, the legislation would have regulated rural streams in Missouri.

The Judge Ann Quill Niederlander Papers contains correspondence, photographs, legal materials, and rewards documenting Quill's service as a magistrate and associate circuit judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit in St. Louis County from 1978 to 1985.

This collection contains Issues of the newsletter from the group Normandy Seniors.

The Northside Preservation Commission Records contain reports, photographs, and audio cassettes and videotapes pertaining to the group's mission to preserve North St. Louis, Missouri's historic properties, as well as help low-income families buy property in the area.

The Paraquad Records contain correspondence, grant files, legislative materials, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the organization's mission to help people with disabilities to live independently in the St. Louis area.

This collection contains meeting and executive committee minutes, correspondence, membership directories, and treasurers' reports relating to Pi Lambda Theta's mission to recognize and students who attain academic excellence.

This collection consists of a photograph scrapbook of a lead paint company in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Personal Rights of Missourians (PROMO) Records contain meeting minutes, newsletters, legislative materials, and educational resources pertaining to PROMO's mission to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ Missourians through education, political lobbying, and grassroots organization.

The Redevelopment Opportunities for Women Records contain newsletters, concert tickets, and programs pertaining to providing financial literacy resources and advocacy to women affected by poverty and domestic violence.

This collection contains photographs, videotape, newspaper clippings, and meeting minutes of the R-9 Community Center.

The Rotary Club of Clayton-Ladue Records contains correspondence, photographs, directories, and newsletters relating to the group's mission to provide humanitarian services to the residents of the St. Louis area.

This collection contains photographs, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, and political ephemera of Geri Rothman-Serot, who was elected to the St. Louis County Council in 1990 and became a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in Missouri in 1992.

The records of the St. Louis Ambassadors contain chronological event memorabilia, directories, videotapes, and photographs relating to the group's mission to help the St. Louis community through helping organizations plan and execute events and assist with electing candidates for political office in Missouri and Illinois.

The records of the St. Louis Economic Conversation Project contain research files and meeting minutes pertaining to the group's mission to redirect arms resources toward peaceful uses.

This collection primarily contains reports on St. Loouis County, including child health and long-term care facilities.

This collection contains meeting minutes, reports, and a newspaper clippings scrapbook of the St. Louis Philanthropic Organization's anti-pornography effort to influence cable television programming.

The State of Missouri incorporated the St. Louis Regional Library Network (SLRLN) in 1977 as a not-for-profit dedicated to providing access to educational opportunities and shared resources for libraries and librarians in the greater St. Louis area, including St. Louis City and County, St. Charles, Franklin, Warren and Lincoln counties. The records contain correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and workshop materials related to SLRLN's administration, finances and networking activities from 1978 to 1987.

This colletion contains topographical area maps produced by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey and Illinois Geological Survey.

The St. Louis Women's Choir Records contain concert programs, a philosophy statement, and retreat materials.

The Metro St. Louis Women's Federal Credit Union Records contain bylaws, a charter, newsletters, and news clippings pertaining to the group's mission to provide economic self-sufficiency for women living the St. Louis metropolitan area.

This collection contains songbooks, scorecards, and photographs pertaining to events, individuals, and places connected to Art Santen, a longtime resident of the Skinker Debaliviere neighborhood and noted collector of bottle caps.

The Dorothy Schneider Papers contain correspondence, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks, and a dissertation pertaining to Schneider's experiences volunteering with the American Red Cross during World War II in the Pacific Theater, as well as her peace activism with the United Nations Day World Holiday.

The Ellen Schwartz Papers contain photographs, a diary, and VHS and cassette tapes of oral histories pertaining to her research on the Freund family.

This collection includes newsletters and publications pertaining to abortion, including copies of "Our Bodies Our Selves" and the "Cervical Cap Handbook."

The Sue Shear Papers contains correspondence, legislative materials, and newspaper clippings relating to her career as a legislator representing St. Louis County (District 83) in the Missouri House of Representatives (1972-1998). Topics of interest in the collection include abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, mental health, and children and families in Missouri.

The James F. Shrewsbury Papers consist of meeting minutes, political campaign material, newspaper clippings, reports, and political campaign materials pertaining Shrewsbury’s career on the 16th Ward Alderman (1983-2007) and the President of the St. Louis Board of Alderman (2002-2007), for the city of St. Louis. This collection also contains political campaign ephemera—bumper stickers, political buttons, and flyers—pertaining to Missouri state and national politicians. The materials in this collection date from 1962 to 2015.

This collection contains postcards depicting the Majestic Hotel; the Cheshire Inn; the Sheraton Jefferson; the Jewel Box in Forest Park; Korean War Memorial in Forest Park; and the Streckfus Steamer "President."

The Skinker-DeBaliviere Times Collections contains issues of the newspaper documenting the history of the neighborhood, including the Delmar Loop and Bolivartown.

This collection contains issues of SLAM magazine, an underground LGBTQ publication.
