The William Lyman Thomas Papers document Thomas's career in St. Louis as a publisher, author, and member of the Missouri Press Association, as well as the life of his family in Maplewood, Missouri. The collection contains correspondence, documents, ribbons, and the original photographs used in the publication of Thomas’ book, The History of St. Louis County, Missouri (1911).

S0305 Schroeder-Winkelmann Family Papers 1847-1990

The Schroeder-Winkelmann Family Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, sheet music, and artifacts chronicling the lives of a German-Catholic family in St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph and Daisy Schroeder were married in 1918, and their daughter Pat married Jim Winkelmann in 1949. The materials in the collection document the family’s involvement in St. Louis’ Catholic community. Also of interest are items related to Missourians’ experiences during World War I, including a German alien registration card and Joseph Schroeder’s military papers and souvenirs.

This collection contains five diaries written by Evelyn May Whitcomb McGregor from 1892 to 1947. In the diaries, McGregor recounts her life in Boston, Massachusetts, her marriage to George McGregor, and their subsequent life in Maplewood, Missouri, where George McGregor owned and operated the McGregor Baking Company. Also included in the collection is a book, '"Then We Went to Powhatton's" Evelyn May Whitcomb McGregor Diaries 1892-1947,' which contains complete transcripts of the diaries.

S0320 St. Louis Strike of 1877 Manuscript 1877-2000

An Unpublished manuscript on the response of the Working Men's Party, St. Louis chapter, to the 1877 national railroad strike. Also included in this collection is an article by David Roediger entitled, "Not Only the Ruling Class to Overcome, But Also the So-Called Mob: Class, Skill and Community in the St. Louis General Strike of 1877," published in the Journal of Social History, Vol. 19, No. 2. Winter 1985.

S0321 Theodore D. McNeal Scrapbook 1941-1943

Records of the St. Louis March on Washington Movement, which was founded in response to A. Phillip Randolph's call for a march to end discrimination in defense work. Executive Order 8802 established the Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC) in June 1941. The local
MOWM picketed businesses and industry, staged mass rallies and succeeded in bringing the FEPC to St. Louis in August 1944 to hold hearings.

S0322 Eddie Johnson Scrapbook of Jazz Musician 1930-1970

Scrapbook of a Jazz musician and pianist. Eddie Johnson, a piano player on the riverboat Idlewyld, took over a jazz orchestra from Oliver Cobb when Cobb died in 1931. The new band, the Crackerjacks, played St. Louis and nationally toured until it disbanded in 1931. The Crackerjacks recorded its most popular song, "Ya Yas," for the Victor label. The band included saxophonists Tab Smith and Ernest Franklin, and trumpeter Harold Baker. The scrapbooks contain playbills and newspaper clippings.

S0323 Elijah J. Shaw Scrapbook 1914-1971

Elijah"Lige" Shaw began drumming in minstrel shows at age 10 in Jackson, Tennessee. He traveled with Bowen's and Blondon's Dandy Dixie Minstrels, the Original Georgia Minstrels, and other theatre and dance orchestras until he settled in St. Louis in the late 1920s. He
worked as a drummer in St. Louis and served several terms as president of Musicians Local 197. The collection contains playbills, correspondence, advertisements, and newspaper clippings on jazz musicians and civil rights sit-ins.

S0329 Frances Hurd Stadler Papers 1917-2000

The papers contain a 15-page typescript titled That Was No Picnic, by Frances Hurd Stadler, recounting her experiences as a stenographer for Bechtel-Price-Callahan’s Canol Project, a $100,000,000 United States Department of War construction project to build an oil pipeline from Norman Wells, Canada, to Whitehorse, Alaska. Also included are photocopied newspaper articles and magazines about Bechtel and the Canol Project.

S0331 Mesker Brothers Iron Works Records 1879-1953

The Mesker Brothers Iron Works Records were loaned for microfilming and document the founding and early development of the company and the personal lives of members of the Mesker family. The records include correspondence, company licenses, shares and checks, catalogues, a patent, an account book and publications relating to the building trades. The collection contains early correspondence between Frank and Ben Mesker from 1882-1886, biographical information, birth and graduation announcements, obituaries, and news clippings regarding members of the Mesker family.

Included in the collection is correspondence between Marcia Cline and other women in the labor movement; topics of interest include implementing a mass socialist movement in the United States.

This collection contains scrapbooks, CDs, and VHS tapes, documenting the group's history as a volunteer women's chorus, with a specialization in four-part, a cappella harmony.  Materials of interest include scrapbooks containing photographs, program booklets, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and histories chronicling the group's yearly activities, including local performances and participation in choir competitions in the United States.

S0337 Father Dickson Cemetery Burial Books 1904-1983

Founded in 1903 by the Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor, a black philanthropic organization. The 13-acre cemetery served African Americans from Webster Groves and Kirkwood. It fell into disrepair in the 1960s. The Friends of Father Dickson Cemetery organized in 1988 to restore the cemetery and promote its heritage.

The John Stuart Forrester Papers includes photographs, correspondence, fliers, scrapbooks, and St. Louis area rock concert posters documenting John Stuart Forrester Sr.'s career as a rock concert promoter and owner of Backstage Galleries, a vintage rock poster store. Also included are Forrester family photographs and correspondence. Items of interest include a poster and related promotional materials for the Ozark Music Festival, held in Sedalia, Missouri, on July 19, 1974.

S0342 Downtown St. Louis Incorporated Records 1927-2001

Downtown St. Louis, Inc. was founded in 1958 by a group of St. Louis businessmen who were interested in the revitalization of downtown St. Louis. In the late fifties and early sixties, many sizeable suburban shopping centers were constructed in all areas of St. Louis County, which took away much of the commercial shopping and entertainment business from downtown St. Louis. Many businesses left the area, and large blocs of office space were empty. The papers consist of newsletters (1958-1974); subject files of correspondence, reports, maps and news releases; and photographs of some of the promotions arranged by Downtown St. Louis, Inc.

S0343 Young Women's Christian Association Metro St. Louis Records 1914-1993

The YWCA collection covers the organization's activities from its inception in 1904 to the late 1970s. The constitution and bylaws, along with revisions and complete financial records are included. The St. Louis YWCA was divided into several branches, including a segregated club for black girls, and each of these groups is represented in the records, which include documentation on programs, summer camps, and clubs maintained by the various branches. The collection also includes a record of programs for which the YWCA shared responsibility with similar organizations, such as the USO, American Red Cross, and the YMCA.

The Institute for Peace and Justice records (1970-1979), document the operation of the Institute from its inception and contain material on the development of peace education courses, workshops, and seminars, including some reference material. The records also include literature and correspondence with affiliated peace groups and a small subjects file. The collection consists of correspondence, staff notes, board and staff meeting minutes, curricula syllabi, evaluations and progress reports, memoranda, textual teaching aids, literature, and some reference material.

Materials of interest include photographs of the Syrian Pioneers,' a LifeWise StL boy's club that catered to the Syrian youth in the early 1900s.

The Charles Guenther Papers, 1899-1991, document the career of the internationally important literary translator and poet. Charles Guenther (1920-2008), nicknamed the "Poet Laureate of St. Louis" was a native of St. Louis and a widely published writer and poet, as well as a founding member of the St. Louis Poetry Society and past president of the St. Louis Writers Guild. The collection includes much of his translation work and poetry; notes and study materials; materials he used to teach and conduct workshops; minutes and newsletters from various Missouri and St. Louis writing and poetry associations; newsclippings on writing and poetry; and some family and personal correspondence and papers.

The Provident Behavioral Health Records contain annual reports, meeting minutes, press releases, scrapbooks, presentations, videotapes, relating to mental health and social services in the St. Louis Area. Found in 1860 by James Yeatman, Provident Behavioral Health's mission is mental health services to St. Louis area residents. The collection also contains the records of Provident's predecessor organizations: The Family and Children's Services of Greater St. Louis, the Family Service Society of St. Louis County, and the St. Louis Children's Aid Society.

The Bob Reuter papers consist of photographs, diaries, flyers, CDs, and a song lyric book, documenting Reuter's life and career as a singer/songwriter, musician, photographer, and host of KDHX's Bob's Scratchy Records. During his career, Reuter belonged to several influential St. Louis-area music groups, including the Dinosaurs (Punk), Kamikaze Cowboy (Alt-Country), and Bob Reuter's Alley Ghost.

The collection contains zines and comic books written, published, and collected by Walter Jaschek, a St. Louis-area comic book and Science Fiction/Fantasy enthusiast. Materials of interest include issues of Grafan that Jaschek helped edit as a member of the Graphic Fantasy Society of St. Louis. Also included in the collection are two issues of The Green Vomit, published by Bob Gale, a St. Louis native and co-writer of the Back to the Future movie series.

Materials of interest include files on the group’s Gridiron dinner and show, which the Advertising Women of St. Louis hosted to benefit St. Louis area charities, including the Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital. The collection is divided into five series: General Files; Gridiron Dinner; Photographs; Oversize; and Scrapbooks and Newspapers. The materials in this collection date from 1916 to 1980.

The records of the Citizens Council on Housing and Community Planning, Incorporated contain correspondence, bylaws, minutes, project files, notes, and reports. The CCHCP was organized in 1946 by leaders from civic, educational, religious, labor, veteran, and social welfare organizations. It later expanded to include members from architectural, planning, legal, building, and real estate organizations. The purpose of CCHCP was to aid in "Achieving adequate housing in well-planned neighborhoods for every citizen." The CCHCP exerted its influence through educational activities, including public forums, institutes, workshops, courses, newsletters, and meetings. Among other projects, CCHCP favored the development of the Pruitt-Igoe Housing Project.

The Dan McGinnis papers consist of photographs of St. Louis-area Star Trek and Science Fiction Conventions, including Galactic Trek Fest and Epsilon Alpha. Photographs of interest consist of Epsilon Alpha celebrity guests visiting young AIDs patients at Washington University's Department of Pediatrics in support of the convention's fundraising efforts for the Department. Also included is an anniversary program for the USS Hexum's anniversary, a Starfleet International Chapter based in Belleville, Illinois.

The Hardy Salt Company Records document the company's founding as a salt packing and distribution business, through its growth into a significant salt manufacturer and distributor in the 1930s, to its sale in 1985 to the Diamond Crystal Company. The collection primarily documents the Manistee Salt plant operations from 1931-1971. It includes Board of Directors' meeting minutes, Profit Sharing Trust meeting minutes, financial statements, articles about salt production, correspondence between Thomas Walter Hardy Jr. and his father, and photographs of the Manistee Plant.
