The Marlin Perkins Papers consist of newspaper clippings, correspondence, zoo animal feeding records, business contracts, equipment lists, maps, archaeological records, publications, and zoological findings, conservation and ecological writings, scrapbooks, photographs, and film. The materials in this collection are related to Marlin Perkins’ involvement in national and international zoos, wildlife and nature conservation, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Zoo Parade, and various other dealings involving wildlife.

Robert A. Young (1923-2007) represented the Missouri Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1986. He served on two major committees, Public Works and Transportation, and Science and Technology. The collection contains correspondence, reports, studies, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Topics of interest include agriculture, civil and human rights, historic preservation, including the Old Post Office in St. Louis, and the city of Kinloch, Missouri.

S0520 Schwarz Studio Taxidermy Records 1882-1987

Founded in 1882 by German immigrant Frank Schwarz, Schwarz Studios passed through four generations to become the oldest taxidermy operation in the United States. Its clients have included L. Roos Fur Company, Adolphus Busch, Simmons Hardware, and special clients such as the Board of Education, the Boy Scouts, and the St. Louis Zoo. The collection contains scrapbooks, daily journals, and customer ledgers of the Schwarz Studio Taxidermy Company, 1882-1987.

S0521 St. Louis/Southern Illinois Labor Tribune Records 1918-2019

Maury Rubin founded the St. Louis Labor Tribune in 1935 to help expose poor quality work on non-union housing projects in St. Louis. Rubin's nephew, Ed Finkelstein, became publisher in the late 1970s, and Rubin died in 1984. The collection primarily includes the paper's photograph negative morgue. Also included in the collection are correspondence, memoranda, and newspaper clippings documenting labor-related events and news stories.

The Wessel and Schaefer Family Papers contain correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, and photographs documenting the lives of Lillian Schaefer and Emil Wessel. The collection contains material both prior to and during their marriage, including family correspondence from 1954. The complete date range of the collection is 1907 to 1975, with bulk dates from 1917 to 1923.

The Mary Stakes Dines Collection contains a photocopy of a diary written by Mary Stakes Dines, the wife of Reverend Tyson Dines, a Confederate sympathizer Also included in the collection are photocopies of the history of the Stratton family and a C ivil W ar parole of Reverend Tyson Dines.

S0527 Philander Salisbury Papers 1843-1880

This collection consists of correspondence between St. Louisan Philander Salisbury, a captain in the Mexican-American War, and his wife Mary, describing preparations for the invasion of Mexico, as well as letters between Ralph and Sephronia Coatsworth from 1855 to 1868.

S0528 Fisk Gore Diary 1850-1897

Fisk Gore probably was born in Boston in 1831. When he was nineteen years old, Gore traveled to California and later to the Klondikeas part of the Gold Rush. During the Civil War, Fisk fought as a soldier in the Union Army while his brother joined the Confederate Army and eventually became a prisoner of war. The diary primarily documents Fisk Gore's experiences during the Gold Rush in California in the 1850s and in the Klondike in the 1890s.

S0529 Albert Lehnhoff Papers 1897-1965

Albert Lehnhoff was a World War I veteran and coal miner in Campbell Hill, Illinois. He was possibly involved in labor organizing that resulted in gunshots being fired at his house. Lehnhoff also worked as a musician at a local tavern and eventually became a restaurant owner. The collection Includes coins issued by the coal mine for spending in the company store; photocopies of Lehnhoff's WWI military records; and newspaper clippings on his family and a tornado that hit Campbell Hill in 1951.

S0530 League of Women Voters of St. Louis Records 1916-1985

The League of Women Voters evolved from the suffrage movement and was initiated to educate the voters of the United States. A non-partisan organization, the League has been involved in most of the political issues in St. Louis since the ratification of the nineteenth amendment. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, subject files, radio scripts, and publications relating to a wide variety of issues and personalities. Also included in the collection are photographs, films, audiotapes, and artifacts.

S0531 Leo A. Drey Papers 1957-1991

Leo A. Drey was an environmental activist and the owner of extensive tracts of Missouri land. Throughout his life, Drey was involved in many conservation projects, including the Natural Streams Act, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and the Open Space Council. The collection includes correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, maps, legal materials, and newspaper clippings reflecting Drey's interests in environmental issues in Missouri.

The Pipkin Family Papers consist of correspondence sent to and from members of the Pipkin Family of Hillsboro, Missouri, including Philip Pipkin, a local attorney, his wife, Sophia Brickey Thomas Pipkin, and her brother, John Lilburn Thomas. Subjects of interest include the Civil War in Jefferson County, Missouri, land sales, and court cases handled by Philip Pipkin.

This collection documents the founding of the University of Missouri-Saint Louis in Normandy. S0535 Endangered Wolf Center Records 1946-1992

The records of the Endangered Wolf Center (formerly the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center), chronicle its establishment, growth, and administration. Founded by Carol and Marlin Perkins in 1971, WSRC bred wolves for reintroduction into the wild and fought for other conservation issues. The collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, articles, publications, legal documents, wolf studies, veterinary reports, conference proceedings, and government legislation.

S0537 Arthur W. Proetz Photograph Collection 1890-1963

Arthur W. Proetz was a lifelong resident of St. Louis, a Washington University graduate, and a surgeon. He authored the book "I Remember You St. Louis," which was illustrated with many of his photographs. The collection consists of a variety fo St. Louis scenes and family portraits, including the Worlds Fair and the Veiled Prophet.

The records of the Illinois Pure Water Committee, Inc., document the efforts of Gladys Caldwell and the Committee in their legal fight against fluoridation, including their efforts to educate the public about the hazards of fluoridation. The materials in the collection consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, newsletters, publications, brochures, and flyers.

S0539 St. Louis Naturalists Club Records 1896-1990

The St. Louis Naturalists Club originated in 1898 when several friends met to discuss topics related to natural science. The club was limited to twelve members and met on the last Saturday of every month at the home of one of its members. The host was responsible for a presentation related to the natural sciences for the edification of their fellow members. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a scrapbook.

Arthur Witman was St. Louis Post-Dispatch news photographer (1932-1969), who pioneered the use of 35mm in news photographs and Organized the St. Louis Press Photographer's Association in 1945. This collection consists of photographs Witman took for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis was founded on October 28, 1972, with a primary mission of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the gay and lesbian community of St. Louis. Materials include administrative files, publications, artifacts, correspondence, and conference materials, which reflect many of the activities of the church and some of its members since its founding, as well as information concerning the gay and lesbian community in St. Louis.

The St. Louis Lesbian and Gay Pride Celebration Committee is responsible for the annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Fest in June. The records consist of Pride Guides from various North American cities, newsletters, local flyers, buttons, and other memorabilia. The microfilmed portion of the collection was loaned for copying and consists of general meetings and board of directors meeting minutes, correspondence, financial reports, and miscellaneous announcements. The microfilm is restricted.

This collection contains publications, t-shirts, buttons, flyers, newsletters, newspaper clippings, charters, by-laws of gay organizations, letters to legislators, and other ephemera documenting the activities of the gay and lesbian community in St. Louis. Included this collection are publications from other parts of the country and national organizations. Several of the St. Louis publications are complete, or near-complete runs.

The St. Louis Blues Musicians Research Collection contains photocopies of newspaper clippings and magazine articles about blues musicians who began their careers in St. Louis, Missouri. Journalist, Kenn Thomas, gathered the research materials in the 1980s for a column in the Riverfront Times regarding St. Louis blues musicians.

The George Allen Shepardson Diaries contain sixty-five annual diaries kept by George Shepardson between the years of 1887 - 1952, during his time living and working in the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area and Illinois. Notable topics within the diaries include teaching in the rural Midwest and at St. Louis boarding schools; work at Cupples Station in St. Louis for the Missouri Pacific Railroad; St. Louis Streetcar strike of 1900; the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 (St. Louis World's Fair); and the World Wars.

The Dorothy Ferneding Diary consists of 98-page diary written by  St. Louis native Dorothy Ferneding (1896-1992) recounting her travel approad to Europe in 1914 during the outbreak of World War I.

S0552 David M. Grant Papers 1917-1986

The David M. Grant Papers document David M. Grant's career in St. Louis as a civil rights activist and lawyer. Beginning in 1931, Grant organized protests and demonstrations against racial discrimination. He was also active in the local Democratic Party, Labor unions, and a founder of St. Louis’ March on Washington Movement chapter. Grant also served on the U.S. Presidential Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. The papers include speeches, correspondence, photographs, political fliers, and newspaper clippings.

S0553 Ray S. Richmond Papers 1914-1984

Ray Richmond was born in Fillmore, Illinois on June 5, 1896. He played minor league baseball for the Bloomers of Bloomington, Illinois before joining the St. Louis Browns in 1920 and 1921. Richmond played eight games for the Browns and had a lifetime record of two wins and one loss. He died in DeSoto, Missouri on December 21, 1969. Scrapbook primarily documents Richmond’s baseball career, with two letters from 1983 and 1984.

This collection provides an overall view of the history and operations of Grace Hill Settlement House, which was formed in St. Louis in 1939. The mission of Grace Hill Settlement House is to provide opportunities for individuals, families, and communities to be stronger, healthier, and more self-reliant. S0555 Bernard F. Dickmann Photograph Collection 1918-1967

Bernard F. Dickmann was the mayor of St. Louis (1933-1941). This collection documents Bernard F. Dickmann tenure as mayor of St. Louis from 1933 to 1941. The photographs include images of visiting dignitaries, groundbreaking for St. Louis Landmarks, the Mayor's Christmas party, and conventions held in St. Louis. The collection also contains a scrapbook of the Missouri exhibition at the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York.

This collection contains oral history interviews conducted with seven members of St. Louis' Chinese-American community in 1993 and 1994. The collection includes 12 audio cassette tapes, transcripts, and accompanying documents supplied by the Chinese Americans interviewed for the oral history project.

Established by the Higher Education Center of St. Louis on June 4, 1974, the Women's Program Council promoted an improved environment for women in higher education, through networking services, two annual conferences, and provided speakers to area campuses. S0560 Robert O. Snyder Papers 1960-1987

Robert O. Snyder served in the Missouri Legislature form 1960 to 1976 when he made an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Congress. He was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals in 1977. The collection contains correspondence, reports, political buttons, and photographs of Robert Snyder.

The St. Louis International Salon of Photography program was an annual photographic exhibit sponsored by the Camera Club of St. Louis, a group organized to promote photography in the region. The programs include selection jury and salon committee names, exhibitors, titles of exhibited prints, and reproductions of prints.

This collection contains two issues of a newsletter published monthly by the St. Louis High School Literary Societies of St. Louis High School. Included in the newsletters are photographic images of the graduating class of June 1898.

S0563 Bertram Atwater Photographs 1894

This collection consists of copy negatives of photographs of Union Station taken in 1894 by Bertram E. Atwater. Atwater was a professional photographer hired to take publication-relations photographs of the new Union Station. He was murdered in Webster Groves in 1896, resulting in the first double-hanging in St. Louis.

The Earlene Coburn Papers contain photographs and correspondence documenting her childhood and early adulthood in St. Louis, Missouri. Materials of interest include images of Coburn participating  Job's Daughters International events, a masonic fraternal order for girls and young women.

Julian Sturtevant Rammelkamp was a journalism historian, history teacher, and one-time chair of the history department at Albion College in Michigan. He authored "Pulitzer's Post-Dispatch," published in 1967. Included in the collection are note cards from his study of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Post, correspondence with major writers, and rare books.

S0579 Robert Leroy Papers 1963-1996

Born in Ellensberg, Washington in 1923, Robert Leroy grew up in the Tacoma area and became involved in populist-right political causes. He served as a paratrooper in the South Pacific during World War II and worked briefly as a public school teacher afterward. In 1962 he joined the Minutemen. LeRoy later split from the group and started another anti-Communist ministry, Christian Sons of Liberty, in 1970, in Liberty, Missouri. The collection includes correspondence, newsletters, photographs, and a copy of LeRoy's autobiography "From My Foxhole to Tokyo."

The Monsanto Texas City Explosion Collection contains the insurance claim for the
1947 Monsanto explosion in Texas City, Texas, and articles reflecting on the disaster 50 years
later. On April 16, 1947, the freighter S.S. Grandcamp exploded at a pier in Texas City, killing
between 500 and 600 people. The insurance claim's cover page calls the explosion "the largest
single risk loss in the history of insurance."

S0593 Edmund C. Oakes Papers 1943-1987

This collection consists of correspondence and military papers of Illinois native Edmund C. Oakes (1916-1986) who served in the US Army at the Battle of the Bulge, where he received disabling wounds. He later became Illinois state commander of Disabled American Veterans. The papers include an emergency war-time teaching certificate of his wife Catherine Oakes and correspondence with political figures Otto Kerner and John F. Kennedy.

This collection contains retouched art prints of St. Louis landmarks, published by C. Witter and presented by the Business Men's League of St. Louis "to our guests Arkansas on Wheels, October 31, 1911." Included in this collection are twenty-four images of St. Louis, including Union Station, the riverfront, Eads Bridge, downtown hotels and skyscrapers, the Coliseum, and library branches.
