Rolla Manuscript Collections

This is paid in full certificate number 6763 AA in the Railroads Unimproved Land Association, which had a development office at Fruit City in Reynolds County, Missouri. The certificate was issued to Mrs. C. Border of Union, Ohio, on May 28, 1914.

These are negative copies of stereoviews, photographs, and postcards from the collection of the William H. Harris family, proprietors of railroad hotels at Dixon in Pulaski County, and Newburg in Phelps County, Missouri. Included are views of hotels, businesses, street scenes, and Frisco railroad roundhouses and turntables at Dixon and Newburg.

These are an annotated Civil War diary and a biography of Preston T. Sharp, a resident of Harrison County, Missouri, and Fall River County, South Dakota, and first lieutenant of Company H, 12th Missouri Cavalry. Edited and compiled by Chuck and Nova Sharp Bolton, the collection includes the story of Sharp's life, and his diary covering the Nashville campaign, December 1864-Januuary 1865, and Powder River Expedition in Wyoming and Montana in 1865.

This is an undated campaign card for Isom P. Langley, Republican candidate for Missouri's 16th district seat in the United States House of Representatives. Langley was from Mountain Gove in Wright County, Missouri.

This is a booklet published for the Central Ozark Aberdeen-Angus Breeders Association's 15th consignment show and sale, held near Salem in Dent County, Missouri on March 13, 1961. Forty-one head of registered cattle were offered at the event. The auctioneer was Wes Hays and the show judge was Vic Gray.

This is a letter dated September 26, 1902 from C. A. "Chess" Manning of Bagnell in Miller County, Missouri, to James E. Millstead at Montreal in Camden County, Missouri. There is an accompanying letter from "Mollie " to "Josie," presumably the wives of Manning and Millstead. The letters concern sowing forage seed and household matters.

This is a booklet for a registered Angus cattle sale at Green Oak Farms near Maples in Texas County, Missouri, on October 7, 1961. Fifty-three cattle, plus five 'calves at foot' were to be sold by proprietor E. E. Martin and guest consigner, Paul Woods.

This is an illustrated promotional brochure advertising the White River Division of the Missouri Pacific Railway. It includes a route map showing towns and features along the line from Crane, Missouri, to Diaz and Newport, Arkansas, a montage entitled "Outdoor Life is Pleasant in The White River Country of the Ozarks," and a listing of representatives of the railroad's passenger and agricultural departments.

Included are schedule of events, photographs of featured performers, and many advertisements for area businesses.

This is a promotional booklet for Rolla, the seat of Phelps County in south-central Missouri. Although undated, it includes data from the 1930 census and a view of the Edwin Long Hotel, which opened in 1931. Also included is a poem, "In the Ozark Hills of Old Missouri", by Dr. J. Curtis Lyter.

This collection contains a booklet published for the Mid-Missouri Angus Association's show and sale of Aberdeen-Angus cattle at the fairgrounds near Rolla in Phelps County, Missouri, on September 16, 1967. Forty-eight head of registered cattle were offered, with Nick Iman serving as the auctioneer.

These are the minutes of the 98th annual session of the Spring River Baptist Association, held with the First Baptist Church of Joplin in Jasper county, Missouri, on September 22-23, 1937. B.A. Pugh served as moderator, and C. T. Sanders was clerk of the session.

This is a letter of October 2, 1886 from A. M. and C. R. Millard, dealers in dry goods at Rolla in Phelps County, Missouri to Eagle & Phenix Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Georgia. The letter concerns an order for cotton yarn.

This is a booklet published for the dispersal sale of Hubert E. Lay's herd of Aberdeen-Angus cattle at Houston in Texas County, Missouri , on September 3, 1961. Fifty-two head of cattle were offered, with Colonel Wesley Hays serving as the auctioneer.

This is a souvenir booklet from the Baldknobbers Hillbilly Jamboree show at Branson in Taney County, Missouri. The show, one of the first in Branson, featured the talents of the Mabe family. Although undated, the booklet is believed to be from the 1970 season.

This is a schedule effective April 24, 1977 for Skyway Airlines, a commuter carrier that served Columbia, Fort Leonard Wood, Lake of the Ozarks, and Rolla in Missouri, with gateway connections at St. Louis and Kansas City.

This small booklet contains the church covenant, articles of faith, and rules of decorum for the United Baptist Church of Piedmont in Wayne County, Missouri. A schedule of services is on the outside back cover. The congretation was organized on July 12, 1959.

This is 'The History of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church,' located in the Otter Creek community on State Road V, south of Piedmont in Wayne County, Missouri. The congretation was organized in 1820.

These are two letters from John Deane at Potosi in Washington County, Missouri, to his nephew, John Deane, at New Rochelle, New York, dated May 4, 1853, and to "Friend Leland," dated March 12, 1854. The letters concern wagons, horses, mules, "silver mineral," and the weather.

This is a souvenir for the students at Richland Rural School for the term 1905-1906. Listed are the names of the teacher (Frank O. Denny), the school board (J.F. Boyd, president), and the names of the pupils. The surnames Lile, Duckworth, Boyd, Knisely, Dody, and Wood were common among the students.

This is a political campaign card for Frank W. Jones of Stotts City, Missouri, who was the Democratic candidate for State Representative from Lawrence County in 1920.

These are minutes of meetings of the board of directors and the stockholders of the Howell County Bank at West Plains in Howell County, Missouri. The minutes begin on October 25, 1890 and continue through November 4, 1912. They concern the elections of directors and officers, approval of loans and discounts, and declarations of dividends to stockholders. Beginning in 1896, there are annual statements of the bank's financial condition by the state bank examiner.

This is a letter dated March 23, 1889 from Munsell and Ware, real estate agents at Eminence in Shannon County, Missouri, to J. W. Rulifson and Bro. of Lincoln, Nebraska. The letter concerns land for sale in Shannon County.

This is the record book and accompanying transcript of the First Baptist Church of Edgar Springs in Phelps County, Missouri, containing minutes of business meetings, and membership records, circa 1894-1954. Also in the volume are earlier records of the Corn Creek Baptist Church in Phelps County, 1886-1887.

These are cancelled checks dated from July 2, 1898 to January 17, 1901, written against the account of the Doe Run Lead Company of Doe Run, Missouri, at the Farmers' and Miners' Bank of Bonne Terre in Saint François County, Missouri. The checks were signed by F. P. Graves, Secretary.

This is a small souvenir booklet for the 1905-1906 school year at Oto Public School in northern Stone County, Missouri. Blanche O. Pritchard was the teacher and H. B. Cox was president of the local school board.

This is a record book kept by the Reverend Thomas Houston Wiles, a Baptist minister or several congregations in Missouri, Colorado, and Kentucky, most notably at Grant Avenue Baptist Church in Springfield in Greene County, Missouri. Included are records of sermons, baptisms, marriages, funerals, and 'conversions and additions' to the membership of his churches.

These are directories of Stone County Schools for the years 1941-1942 and 1942-1943, compiled by county superintendent Raymond H. Patterson. Included are lists of schools, administrators, teachers, other employees, and statics on enrollment, assessed valuation, and tax levies.

This is a membership directory for 1951 for the Galena Chapter No. 7 of the Order of the Eastern Star at Galena in Stone County, Missouri. Included are the names of elected and appointed officers, the auditing committee, and every member.

This is the program booklet for the second annual meeting of the fiftieth District of the Daughters of Rebekah, held at Peirce (now Pierce) City in Lawrence County, Missouri, on February 22, 1910. Mollie Clutter of Monett served as president.

This is a certificate, dated October 24, 1885, for M. J. Crews as a Master Mason and member of Iron Mountain Lodge No. 430, Free and Accepted Masons, at Iron Mountain in Saint Francois County, Missouri.

This is a souvenir of the Winter Term, 1910, for the Riverside School in Butler County, Missouri. Farrar Foster was the teacher and J.D. Mercer, R.P. Neel, and W. A. Cravens were directors of the local school district.

This is "Herriman Chapel Camp: 60 Years of Vision," an illustrated history of a religious campground in Cedar County, Missouri, affiliated with the Church of God (Holiness). Hazel Messick conducted the historical research and Art Witt provided the photographic restoration and layout for the booklet.

This collection contains a photocopy of a bond certificate dated May 29, 1840 for $250, issued by the Osage Mining and Smelting Company, a Missouri corporation with offices in Baltimore, Maryland. The certificate is signed by Edward Hinkley, president pro-tem, and F. H. Davidge, Secretary.

This is a minute book for Granby Lodge No. 113 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Granby in Newton County, Missouri. The minutes begin on March 30, 1867 and end on February 12, 1873. Minutes between October 12, 1867 and April 11, 1868 are missing.

This is the "Ninth Annual Catalogue" of the Springfield Normal School and Business College at Springfield in Greene County, Missouri. The presidents of the proprietary school were Allen Moore and John A. Taylor. In addition to the normal and commercial courses the college included a conservatory of music and an approved summer school.

This is a program booklet for the fifty-second annual conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of the State of Missouri, held a the Masonic Temple in Springfield in Greene County, Missouri, on May 27-28, 1913.

This is a printed letter, dated October 10, 1905, from John L. Douglass & Company of New York, New York, to the stockholders of the Missouri Lead and Coal company and the stockholders of the Standard Lead & Smelting Company. The letter presented a plan whereby the stockholders could exchange their shares for those of a successor company.

This is the 20th anniversary souvenir booklet for the Alhambra Grotto of the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm. Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, Alhambra Grotto maintained a county club on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway west of Newburg along Little Piney Creek in Phelps County, Missouri. The booklet includes history, photographs, portraits, accounts of activities and every-name membership roster.

This booklet contains the minutes of the 57th annual convention of the Missouri Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, held at Black River Lodge near Lesterville in Reynolds County, Missouri, on September 28-30, 1954. Lucile V. Wallace was president.

These are nine letters from Paul Sheldon "Shel" Wise, a Signal Corps trainee at Camp Crowder in Newton County, Missouri, to his parents and family in Steubenville, Ohio. Wise was assigned to the 804th Signal Service Regiment at the Midwestern Signal Corps Replacement Training Center.

The Phelps County Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Records contain meeting minutes, printed newsletters, and scrapbooks of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center
Auxiliary (now Phelps Health Auxiliary and Volunteer Services) at Rolla, Missouri. Organized in 1950 as a women’s auxiliary to the Phelps County Memorial Hospital (now Phelps Health), the Auxiliary grew to coordinate a number of programs including volunteer services, fundraising, programs for youths, and nursing scholarships.

This is a souvenir booklet produced for the sesquicentennial celebration of Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri, held September 8-10, 1989. Shirley Cash edited the booklet, which includes historical items by Leonard Bauer, Jack Dieckman, Roy Donnell, and Evelyn Goosen, "then and now" illustrations of Cole Camp, and advertisements of local business.

This is a report of death of Private James Perkins of Company G, Ninth Missouri State Militia Cavalry. Perkins died November 3, 1864 of acute bronchitis at the United States Army General Hospital at Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri.

This is "Petty Ledger B" of Campbell, Love & Company, a general merchandise firm at Rolla in Phelps County, Missouri. Joseph Campbell and Robert A. Love were general principals. The entries show the accounts of various individuals for groceries, tobacco, spirits, dry goods, hardware, and lumber, July 1868--August 1869.

These are miscellaneous papers of the Joplin League of Women Voters. The papers include correspondence of the treasurer, Marjorie T. Wolcott, with the Missouri League of Women Voters, the National American Women Suffrage Association, the Republican National Committee, and the Democratic National Committee. The correspondence concerns contributions to the State League and expenses for local programs.

This collection consists of corresondence, legal papers, journals, ledger books, and ephemera of Mary E. Bugg Eversole and the Bugg, Cole, and Eversole families of Potosi, Washington County, Missouri. The bulk of the collection consists of Mary E. Bugg's personal correspondence, 1883-1941, financial records 1912-1952, and miscellaneous ephemera, 1863-1938.

These are the time book and miscellaneous business papers of the Sligo Furnace Company in Dent County, Missouri. The time book includes the names, occupations, and wages of workers from April 1898 through March 1900. The miscellaneous papers include an inventory of the property in 1904, and papers concerning operation of the Sligo Mercantile company stores at Sligo and East End, and the operation and abandonment of the Sligo and Eastern Railroad Company.

This is a blueprint plat of the Sligo Furnace Company plant at Sligo in Dent County, Missouri, showing the furnace, charcoal kilns, chemical plant, and track of the Sligo and Eastern Railroad. The plat also shows residences, shops, and other structures in the village along with associated streets and water mains.

This is the souvenir program of the seventeenth annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Drummer's Association, held in Festus and Crystal City in Jefferson County, Missouri, May 22-24, 1913. The program features a schedule of events, photographs of officers and members of the association, description of prominent Jefferson County businesses, and view of businesses, residences, and public buildings in Festus and Crystal City.

This is a black and white panoramic photograph of Big Piney, Missouri after the storm on Novemeber 25 1926. The photograph shows the tornado damage to the Pulaski County village, early abutomobiles, and onlookers. Photographer not known.

This is a souvenir booklet for the dedication service of Emmanuel Evangelical Church's new building on May 20, 1928. The church, founded in May 1867, is located at Jackson in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

This is a booklet containing the register and bylLaws of the Republic Lodge, No. 570. A.F. & A.M. in Republic, Missouri, June 30, 1914. The "Republic Monitor Print" of Republic, Missouri published the twenty-one page booklet for the lodge on June 30, 1914.

This collection consists of correspondence, personal and legal papers, ledger book, scrapbook and ephemera of artist Lennis Leonard Broadfoot. The collection predominately focuses on his artwork and publications, as well as his promotion of the Ozarks region in Dent and Shannon Counties through the creation of a national park, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and the promotion of the arts in general.

These are account books, ledgers, cash books, and other business records of the Valle Mining company at Valles Mines, Missouri. Most of the collection concerns mining on the Valle tract in Jefferson and Saint Francois Counties and related general merchandizing at the company's store. There are various records showing the receipt and shipment of ores, names of individual miners, charges and credits to individual and company accounts, and shipments of mineral to the Carondelet Zinc Works at Carondelet, Missouri, and consignment houses in Saint Louis and New York.

The William Devol Dobkins Photograph Collection contains ninety-two photographs, consisting primarily of contact prints from the original glass-plate negatives. Of these, at least eighty are attributed to William “Will” Devol Dobkins. The majority of these images were shot between 1892 and 1920. They show outdoor views of life in and around Crawford County, Missouri.

The Katherine J. Hinchey-Cochran Family Papers consisted of family papers, photographs, correspondence, and business records of the extended Hinchey family. Also included are the correspondence and sketches of William J. Hinchey.

This is a scrapbook concerning activities at the State Federal Soldiers' Home at St. James in Phelps County, Missouri, created by Berthold Falkenhainer, official press representative of the Home. It contains newspaper articles written by Falkenhainer, correspondence, and photographs.

This is a booklet produced by the Steelville Ledger for a reunion of former students of the Steelville Normal and Business Institute, June 25-27, 1936. It consists of fourteen issues of the newspaper, each containing one or more articles on the school and the reunion, bound into a single volume. The stories include character sketches and reminiscences of students and teachers, along with portraits of the faculty and many of the students.

The poster is a collage of images that were mounted to a piece of plywood and then shot as one large halftone photograph. The poster includes an eagle logo, the title "Eagle Hurst Ranch, Huzzah, Mo" and fifteen halftones of various scenes at the Ranch. Among these half-tones are the entrance gate to the Ranch, the swimming pool, horseback riding, fly fishing, scenic views of the woods and the Huzzah River, swimming in the river, the dining hall and cabins.

This collection consists of a twenty-five page booklet, "Flight Lines," that recorded the graduates of Class 44F from Primary Flying Training at Chester Army Air Field in McBride, Missouri published on February 12, 1944.

The Scott County Milling Company was formed on May 14, 1904 by the consolidation of the Greer-Ebert
Milling Company and the Bowman-Matthews Milling Company. The firm operated flour mills at Sikeston in Scott County, Missouri, and nearby locations. The items in this collection consist mostly of financial accounting volumes, including journals, ledgers, and cash books. Although these records end in 1918, the company remained in operation until its dissolution in 1979.

The John James Sitton Papers consists of a three volume journal, scrapbook, miscellaneous papers, and photographs, 1860-1913 of a Missouri confederate soldier and postwar resident of Oregon Coounty, Missouri. The journal, 1860-1882, documents service in the Missouri State Guard and other confederate units in Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi during the Civil War. It also includes his veterans activities and other aspects of Sitton's life.

This is a 152-page minute book Auxiliary No. 7 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the United States of America, William T. Stewart Camp No. 14 of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The volume contains minutes of the fortnightly meetings of the SV Auxiliary No. 7 from 1920 through 1929.

This Atlantic and Pacific Railroad volume is a register of warranty and quitclaim deeds by the for lands
sold by the company in Barry, Franklin, Gasconade, Greene, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Phelps,
Pulaski, Stone, and Webster Counties in Missouri.

These are personal papers, photographs and miscellaneous items of Rudy Foree, a resident of Washington
County, Missouri, and United States Army veteran of the Pacific campaigns of World War II. The collection contains genealogical material compiled by Esther M. Ziock Carroll of Potosi, Missouri, including Foree's birth and death certificates and a family history.

This collection consists of four scrapbooks of newspaper clippings compiled by Martha Ann Veach Dicus
of Steelville, Missouri. The scrapbooks include wedding notices, birth announcements, death notices, obituaries, and items of local interest in Crawford, Franklin and Washington Counties and the communities of
Cuba, Palmer, Steelville, and Sullivan.

This collection consists of three black and white photographs loaned for copying. Two images show the historic building that now houses Sands Farm and Home Center at 107 East 6th Street in Rolla. The earliest image, circa 1900, shows two unidentified workmen in front of the blacksmith shop. The second image is a "real photo" postcard, circa 1908, also featuring the blacksmith shop. It shows one of the same workmen from the earlier view, two unknown men, and an extremely tall man in an apron. The third photograph
is a birds-eye view of Rolla, circa 1930, showing downtown Rolla from the railroad tracks looking southwest long West 7th Street. This photograph is attributed to I. J. Baumgardner, a Rolla photographer active from 1912 to 1941.

This is a reunion booklet for Gaddis School near Cassville in Barry County, Missouri. The school operated from 1891 through 1964. The booklet, produced on the occasion of a reunion of the school's former students and teachers in 1988, includes historical information, excerpts from school records, and photographs of students and teachers.

The collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and black and white photographs documenting construction of the Phelps County Memorial Hospital in Rolla, Missouri, 1949-1950. Newspaper accounts include coverage of the ground breaking ceremony on July 1, 1949 and completion of the building's exterior in October 1950. The bulk of the scrapbook consists of over a hundred "Kodak" views prints showing sesquential progression of showing site preparation and completion of the hospital's exterior.

This collection consists of twenty-nine black and white and two color photographs showing scenes and businesses in Rolla, Missouri from the 1930s into the 1970s.

This collection consists of fourteen black and white photographs loaned for copying by Carolyn Parry Tilford. The photographs include images common to rural and agricultural life from early 1900 to the 1920s such as a barn-raising, church construction, cattle and mules, steam-powered farm equipment, and a gasoline-powered sawmill. Most of the images are from the Elk Prairie neighborhood of Phelps County, but there are also three views of cattle ranching at the Rhinehart Ranch in Shannon County. Rhinehart Ranch, also known as Spring valley Ranch, is located northwest of Eminence in Shannon County, Missouri. It was most active 1900-1924. the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its agricultural and architectural significance.

This collection consists of twenty-three black and white and twenty color photographs that were loaned for scanning. The photographs include agricultural activities and rural farm life from the early 1910s to 1980s in Phelps and Dent Counties. The photographs include subjects such as cattle and hog raising, baling hay, showing livestock and the Lake Spring Homemaker's Club in 1953.

The Israel J. Baumgardner Photograph Collection contains the negatives created by Baumgardner, a photographer in Rolla, Missouri. Many of the images are studio portraits, but others include roadside landmarks of Route 66, World War I and II era images, and the local area. He also engaged in commercial and advertising photography.

This is a record book showing lead ore received by the Renault Lead Company, from mines at Palmer in Washington County, Missouri. Entries record the date, mine origin, miner, hauler, and price paid per thousand pounds of mineral from April 3, 1900 through March 4, 1917.

These are papers of a long term Democratic state legislator from Crawford and Phelps Counties in Missouri. The collection includes photographic portraits of Farris and his printed orations, newspaper clippings and other items from political campaigns, and newspaper death notices and memorials collected after Farris's death in 1926.
