Columbia Manuscript Collections

The United Klans of America collection contains promotional material and literature created by the organization for the purpose of recruitment and propaganda. A college student gathered the materials for the purpose of writing a college level research paper in 1973.

The papers contain photographs of the 4th Missouri Infantry Machine Gun Company of the National Guard during their service along the Mexican border in Laredo, Texas, in 1916. Sidney B. Phillips served with the 4th Missouri Infantry from 1916-1918. The papers also include army manuals issued to soldiers in 1913 and 1941.

The papers of Lee Jellum, a photographer from Ludlow, Missouri, include four order books listing names of clients, fees paid, and the service rendered; personal correspondence; and an obituary for a W.G. Vollrath, a photographic supply house worker.

The records contain meeting minutes of the Richmond Greys Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and scrapbooks of the Charlotte Jones Smith Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy.

The papers contain schoolwork consisting of trigonometry and navigation calculations; merchandise accounts; tax receipts; affidavit of Peter Krohn accepting the duties of the post office, and an internal revenue license granted to Peter Krohn of Linn, Missouri, as a retail dealer, 1847-1869.

The records of the Missouri Association of Republicans largely contain materials for Lincoln Days including programs, tickets, registration forms, correspondence, newspaper articles, photographs, and campaign materials. Included are lists of officers and vice presidents, as well as Missouri Federation of Republican Women materials pertaining to the event. The correspondence of Herbert Douglas, 1943 president and historian of the Missouri Association of Republicans, regards the history of the Association of Young Republicans of Missouri.

The papers of Cordell W. Tindall contain materials regarding the University of Missouri Extension Program, including publications, reports, budgets, correspondence, and newspaper articles. The bulk of the papers relate to the 1977 evaluation of the extension program, for which Tindall served as Commission Chairman.

The records of the Citizens Bank of Bucklin, Missouri, contain the meeting minutes of the bank's Board of Directors.

The records of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church contain membership records of the church formerly in existence in northern Boone County near Hallsville, Missouri, including some pastor lists, marriages, and baptisms.

The records of banks and other businesses in Lexington, Missouri, contain account books, day books, letter books, statement books, protest of payment books, copy books, minute books, and bills of lading.

The papers of a former World War I fighter pilot and later Deputy Superintendent of Insurance contain biographical and genealogical data on George A.S. Robertson and the Robertson and related family.

The records of a general store owned by John and Abigail King in Oak Grove, Missouri. The accounts were kept by their son, Herbert King. An index is included.

The papers of Walter Dalton contain correspondence, miscellaneous papers, and newspaper clippings regarding Dalton, an Air Force Reserve officer, attorney, and civic leader.

The papers of a former military officer and Dean Emeritus of faculties and professor of chemistry at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College consist of military papers containing special orders, memos, reports, forms, separation papers, physical exams, service records, staff lists, and photographs of Rieger and other military officers. Additional records in the collection consist of letters of recognition upon Rieger’s retirement from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College.

The collection consists of mailing envelopes used during the Civil War which express pro-Union sentiment in the form of artistic caricatures.

This collection is a transcription of the Sainte Genevieve District, Missouri, Land Record Book A containing recordings of the sale of land titles and livestock, the sale and emancipation of enslaved persons, transfers of titles and claims, indentures, marriage contracts, and other types of estate property and goods.

The records of the Immanuel United Methodist Church, Canton, Missouri, contain quarterly conference minute books, Sunday school records, and Epworth League minute books. Some of the volumes are written in German.

The records of the United Methodist Women of the Missouri United Methodist Church contain minutes, reports, budgets, correspondence, record books, yearbooks, programs, activities, and photographs.

The diary of a young man working in the buying and selling of real estate, and his experiences in social life, particularly as it pertains to marriage.

The papers of the Dunlap family contain farm documentation, estate settlements, letters, greeting cards and other materials gathered between the members of the Dunlap family from Breckenridge, and Jefferson City, Missouri.

The papers of C.S. Johnson contain genealogical research material on the Johnson and other related families. The material includes genealogical correspondence, research notes, family lineage charts, wills, deeds and abstracts.

The daybook of the B.G. Pulliam Dry Goods store in Middletown, Montgomery County, Missouri, contains names of dry goods store customers and an itemized list of goods purchased and prices paid.

The records of the United Methodist Church, Lake of the Ozarks Parish, contain printed material, programs, evaluations, pamphlets and miscellaneous material of an ecumenical ministry in the recreational area of Bagnell Dam.

The volumes consist of one cash account ledger and two merchandise ledgers

A photocopied minute book of the Goshen Primitive Baptist Church, containing the church constitution, meeting minutes, appointments of officers, and information on church members.

The papers contain “Our Essman Heritage,” a genealogical story of the Essman family, written by John H. Essman, Jr., and four merchandise, account, and school assignment ledger books belonging to John H. Essman Sr. The cash books describe family credits and debits for their personal household.

The diaries of John M. Roberts, a rural schoolteacher in Henry County, Missouri, describe the classes he taught, students, the weather, and health of family members. The diaries also describe his other occupations as a farmer, itinerant bookseller, a reporter for local newspapers, and a brief view as a partisan Democrat.

The notebooks of a horticulturalist for the Fulton State Hospital in Fulton, Missouri. Please note that these are purely notes pertaining to the business of horticulture. There is no material on the state institution.

This collection includes diaries of Wilbert S. "Wib" Myers from 1887-1907. Also includes an autograph book from Emma Josephine Wheeler along with tintypes of her with family and friends in 1891. Wilbert S. Myers also wrote "Record of Life Events" and "Births, Marriages, Deaths" of citizens of Miami, Missouri and Whittier, California.

Civil War letters from family, friends, and commanders to William H. Smith while serving in Mississippi and Virginia in General Francis M. Cockrell's 2nd Missouri Infantry, 1st Missouri Brigade.

Genealogical correspondence and notes, family group (pedigree) sheets, portrait and biographical records, death certificates, census records, marriages, obituaries, pension application, court documents, deeds, and wills. Material was used in writing a book on the McGaugh family.

Papers of a faculty member of the University of Missouri School of Social Work and Director of Undergraduate Studies include correspondence, publications, committees, and reports, with the bulk of material dealing with the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals which was held in Washington, D.C. in 1977, and also material from the Mid-Missouri Regional Conferences.

A collaborative project between the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Missouri Humanities Council, this collection emphasizes the past and present influence of German heritage in Missouri, including historic sites, past people, notable conflicts, religious influence, agriculture, music, art, and architecture. The German Heritage Corridor will focus on the counties north and south of the Missouri River, from St. Charles and St. Louis, to Chariton, Saline, and Lafayette. This corridor includes several distinct German communities, including New Melle, Herman, Dutzow, and Westphalia.

Records of a women's organization dedicated to assisting foreign women living in Columbia, Missouri. Generally, women who were wives of husbands working at the University or attending the University, but also for women who were working at or attending the University themselves. The organization provided help which included English language assistance, various social events, child care, advice on renting an apartment, opening a bank account, obtaining a driver's license, and tips on shopping at local stores. The organization provided hostesses, many of whom were also from other countries, but had been in the U.S awhile, to assist foreign women living in Columbia.

Biographical material, newspapers, newsletters, radio broadcasting material, and plain language program in business forms material of a 1941 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Liosnoff was a newspaper reporter, editor and radio editor and writer, as well as a Director of Public Affairs management for the U.S. High Commissioners and U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryuku Islands. He was also head of the Plain Language Program though the Bank of America.

Diaries kept by Hugh R. Gardner while an employee of the Columbia Sand Company, Rocheport, Missouri. Includes detailed summaries of Gardner's daily employment schedule, miscellaneous receipts, record of barge operations on the Missouri River near Rocheport, weather reports, personal activities, including repairs to Gardner's pick-up truck, and an appointment calendar kept by Mrs. Gardner.

Correspondence and manuscript material used in writing the book, Judicial Tyranny, the Palmyra Incident and the Mary Susan Goodwin case. Manuscript material includes revision material, editing, and handwritten notes.

The records of a literary club contain constitutions, minutes, and membership lists of the club.

The papers of Jane Guthman Kahn contain material concerning Press Time, a publication of the University of Missouri Journalism Students' Association and include issues of the publication and correspondence with nationally-known members of the journalism and advertising fields on various topics of interest to journalism students.

The papers of a journalist who worked for Newhouse News Service contain newsletters for employees of the organization.

The papers chronicle the lives of Ralph L. Morris and his wife, Alice “Billie” Morris, and include photographs, newspaper articles, a scrapbook, and genealogical material.

Papers of a German American family from Bay, Missouri, largely consist of material concerning the Henry and Elise Neibruegge Doermann and Fred Doermann families and include photographs, correspondence, financial papers, military papers, and miscellaneous material. The Missouri Sports & Recreation Oral History Project is a regular, on-going project conducted by the State Historical Society of Missouri. Sean Rost serves as the Oral Historian for the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Missouri Humanities Council. He started this position in January 2018. The images in this collection were taken during Rost's travels throughout the state on oral history projects and on personal time.

Ramsay, whose students compiled a survey of Missouri places in the 1930s. The survey was intended to produce a dictionary of Missouri place names.

Civil War diary (3 April 1863-10 May 1865) written in poetry form by a Confederate soldier from Boone County who served with Company I, 2nd Volunteers, 6th Regiment, Missouri Infantry. Nichols was assigned to hospital duty in the Meridian, Mississippi, area. Collection also includes a partial transcription of the diary and copies of a photograph of Nichols and his military papers.
