The papers of Ernest Jesse Palmer contain correspondence between Palmer and his associates in fields of botany, geology, and archaeology. Most of collection deals with identification of plant species, especially the hawthorn (Crataegus). Also included is correspondence with his family in Webb City, Missouri, and W.D. The papers contain an account by Ethel Milton Hughes of the ceremony dedicating a new monument at the grave of Brigadier General John Taylor Hughes, C.S.A. (1817-1862), in Independence, Missouri. Also address delivered on the occasion by Henry A. Bundschu. Hughes was killed in 1862 at the first battle of Independence.
