Columbia Manuscript Collections

The papers of Frederick A. Middlebush contain material pertaining to his position as president of the University of Missouri, including correspondence, press releases, memos, reports, articles, and pamphlets, as well as personal papers. In addition, there are papers regarding his activities as a member of the Commission on the Financing of Higher Education, Navy Civilian Advisory Board, and Committee on the Present Danger, the Presbyterian Church, the National Science Board, and the National Science Foundation.

The civic, professional, and social organization papers of Doris Crump Bradshaw include material pertaining to the League of Women Voters, Missouri Library Association, Fortnightly Club, Columbia Garden Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Active in the American Association of University Women, Bradshaw served as state legislative chairman, 1945-1949, and state social studies chairman, 1950-1951.

State, national and interfraternity correspondence of a national organization founded in 1905 in Columbia, Missouri, regarding establishment, development and expansion of FarmHouse Fraternity; chapter information including charter petitions; invoices; organization manuals; pledging handbooks and initiation procedures; miscellaneous materials.

The records of the Rural Sociological Society of America contain presidential and committee correspondence and include accounts of how some of the first rural sociologists became interested in the profession. Microfilm is available for Rural Sociology, the official quarterly.

The records of the University of Missouri Department of History contain administrative, interdepartmental, and personal correspondence; minutes of meetings; administrative records; graduate files; applications for positions; federal relief programs, military training programs; university committees; Alpha Pi Zeta; Social Studies Council; and records of the semi-centennial dinner.

Correspondence, printed brochures, pamphlets, periodicals, journals, and books of the Missouri East Conference, United Methodist Church, including papers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Root, an educator, lawyer, and minister, lived in New York before moving to Columbia, Missouri, to become professor of English at the University. During his ten-year residence in Missouri, Root served in several capacities as educator and minister. The papers include sermon sketches, personal writings, speeches, and newspaper clippings.

The papers contain printed materials concerning the 1969 free speech controversy at the University of Missouri-Columbia, such as leaflets, letters, resolutions and newspaper articles, as well as information regarding the supportive role of Lincoln University. Also included are materials on the student rights’ march, Students for Democratic Society summer workshop, and incidents at Lincoln University leading to the issuing of a temporary restraining order.

This collection includes a tentative version of a policy statement by the president of University of Missouri at Columbia regarding the university’s future, role of each campus, and scope of individual campus programs. Also includes ACE Roose-Anderson Report (1969) rating Graduate Departments at University of Missouri at Columbia.

The papers contain pamphlets and newspapers gathered during student strike and anti-war moratorium at University of Missouri-Columbia, October 15, 1969. Materials present various views and positions regarding U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia and student attitudes toward this involvement.

The Center and Periphery newsletter was a College of Arts and Science faculty newsletter resulting from concern over communications breakdown within University of Missouri-Columbia. The newsletter ceased publication when UMC-NEA chapter was organized and began publishing Faculty Perspectives. Included are statements of purpose and editorial policy, and discussions of academic freedom, faculty responsibilities, political pressures vs. educational needs, teacher/course evaluation, pertinent book reviews, admission and budget policies, role and scope proposal, library, salary studies, and other issues.

These records include three types of reports: 1) reports listing expenditures, number of faculty and students, value of property/equipment, and library holdings; 2) scholastic reports giving breakdown of students into various fields, kinds of degrees offered, and University’s income; and 3) supplementary statistical reports. The papers of Arthur Chester Ragsdale contain his notes and writings on the Department of Dairy Husbandry at University of Missouri. Included are listings of chairmen and staff plus teaching/research programs and very detailed explanation of various research projects. Also included are a history of the dairy extension project, dairy production data for Missouri and the United States, and one miscellaneous list of publications.

The records of the Agricultural Extension Service contain correspondence, program outlines, and essays on benefits of home demonstration service, as well as early records of homemakers’ clubs and home extension services in Missouri.

A paid political advertisement, "The True Davis Story" aimed at informing Missourians about Davis' background, experience, and political reputation during his 1968 campaign for Democratic nomination for U.S. senator from Missouri. The paper also gives Davis' views of the major campaign issues.

The collection contains honorary degree citations presented to Tennessee Williams, Frank Ackerman, and Walter Cronkite.

Transcription of interview with William Peden, an English professor and fiction writer. Peden gives his views on advantages and disadvantages of various literary forms, especially novel and short story, in terms of writing process and effectiveness; effects of television on short story market, as well as comparison of academic literary journals with sophisticated, mass-circulated magazines. He discusses the literacy potential of Missouri environment, especially Boone County, and the literary circles in St. Louis, 1910-1925. The interview concludes with major literary influences upon Peden.

The papers of Earl Lockridge Bradsher, professor of English and American literature at Louisiana State University, contain manuscript poetry of Bradsher as well as correspondence and miscellaneous material. All poetry is entitled “Starts, Parts, First Drafts,” and varies in style and content. Among topics treated are nature, philosophy, literature and geographical areas.

The papers of Russell S. Bauder, a University of Missouri professor, economist, and arbitrator, consist of arbitration cases and labor agreements, 1929-1971; U.S. Employment Service papers, 1935-1939; U.S. National War Labor Board, Wage Stabilization material, 1942-1952; speeches and articles, 1932-1943; miscellaneous economics papers and correspondence, 1939-1949; and miscellaneous reference materials, 1910-1960.

The papers of William Hull contain personal and political papers for his years serving as a U.S. Congressman for the Sixth Missouri District in the 84th through 92nd Congresses. The papers largely consist of constituent correspondence and are arranged topically by Employment, 1954 Campaign, Staff Applications, General, Invitations, Congressional Bills, Federal Agencies, Committees, Veterans, Flood Control, Military Cases, Missouri, and Press Releases.

The records of the Department of Forestry contain correspondence, leases, maps, and miscellaneous material regarding the sale and leasing of land owned by the Department of Forestry at the time the department was part of the College of Agriculture.

The papers contain correspondence, transcriptions of speeches, and pamphlets about newspaper libraries; correspondence and news coverage about publication of The President’s Words; reports; copies of Subject Classification for Clipping and Picture Files by Shoemaker; and World War II photographs.

The records contain limited correspondence, invoices, cancelled checks, bank deposit slips, sales receipt books, time books, cash books, order books, day books, and ledgers of the Anchor Milling Company in Tuscumbia, Missouri.

The collection contains a photocopy of a record book from the Lexington Presbyterian Church listing original and new members; elders; births; deaths; baptisms, records of meetings; investigations, dismissals’ division of church; and other church affiliations.

The papers of O.T. Coleman contain clippings; World War I envelopes with censor stamp; biography; reports on limestone grinding, soil, work for farmers on relief; letters about book reviews, articles, Missouri State Extension Service, nomination as fellow of American Society of Agronomy, awards; letters of commendation; appointment as extension professor emeritus.

The records of the University of Missouri Graduate School contain minutes of graduate committees, 1911-1967, and correspondence of the dean of the Graduate School with administrators, graduate faculty, graduate students, government officials, foundation officers, and alumni, 1930-1967.

The papers of a freelance writer contain Herndon’s collaboration with Vic Obeck in writing How to Exercise Without Moving a Muscle, a volume about isometric exercises; papers relating to Herndon’s compilation and publication of The Humor of J.F.K., a collection of Kennedy quotations; and material related to Military Air Transport Service used in writing Over the Hump with William H. Tunner.

The papers of a St. Louis journalist and organizer of the 1904 World’s Fair. First section includes items from Reeve’s early journalistic career. The bulk of the papers in the second section concern the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, related materials, and photographs.

The collection contains personal letters written by Trenholme to his mother, Louise Trenholme Stephens. Trenholme was a naval officer and later a nuclear physicist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There are also letters from Trenholme’s wife, mother-in-law, and other relatives.

As educator and administrator at the University of Missouri, English served as director of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, dean of the College of Arts and Science, and professor of history. The papers include personal correspondence and topical materials.

The records of the School of Forestry contain correspondence from the Westveld and Duncan administrations and are retained in the original filing system of six major sections: Extension, Forestry School Administration, Personnel, Research, Teaching, and University Administration.

The papers of the University of Missouri German Club and Modern Languages Division contain correspondence and minutes written in both English and German. The papers are partially translated and include programs, menus, elections, degree requirements, clippings, visitors, songs, photographs, and five woodcuts for German Christmas cards.

The papers contain correspondence and financial records including correspondence about the election of and the personal histories of members of the chapter.

The collection contains a copy of a typescript of reminiscences by Lieutenant Young, C.S.A., of Paris, Kentucky, recounting the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dalton, Dallas, Atlanta, and Jonesboro.

The collection contains a church record book dating from 1824 to 1868. Includes the rules of decorum, the covenant, a list of members, reports of the monthly meetings, description of the welcoming of new members, raising money by subscription to build a church, decisions on church membership, and a typed index done by the donor.

Plat, description, and letters regarding land claims in New Madrid County entered by Henry Masters, George Ruddle, and Joseph Gravier.

The collection contains a statistical table, by county, of all churches in Missouri, giving the number of schools, teachers, and pupils for each county and denomination.

The collection contains recollections of Williams' Civil War experiences. A sergeant in an Ohio division, he enlisted at age 18 after teaching school in Elizabethtown, OH.

The collection contains a diploma from Hardin College, Mexico, Missouri.

The papers of the Ellsworth-Kilmer family contain deeds, letters, and receipts of two families of Stoddard County, Missouri.

The collection contains an account book of money collected by Bacon Chapel church subscription and kept by William O. Lowman. The subscription was for a new building.

The collection contains a cash book of the domestic money order office at Rockview, Missouri, Post Office, July 1914 to August 1915; two pages from the record of money orders issued giving the remitter and payee, the amount of the order, and the date issued.

The collection contains letters between Attebery and the commanders of the U.S.S. St. Clair County.

The papers of Margaret M. Brashear contain correspondence, manuscripts, notes, clippings, student papers, and articles of Margaret M. Brashear, who was a professor of English at the University of Missouri. She taught classes on Mark Twain and Missouri literature and wrote several books and articles.
