Place name:All Souls Unitarian Church
Description:At 3427 Baltimore. It was organized in 1868 and first located at the southeast corner of present Baltimore and Tenth Street. Reverend L.M. Birkhead, the pastor of the church, writes that the name "...evolved from the idea of All Souls Day. In this name is included the idea that all souls are welcome, irrespective of beliefs or lack of beliefs." Since sometime in the eleventh century the Catholic Church has observed November 2 as All Souls Day, a day dedicated to the memory of the dead who had died as believers. (D.A.R., 223; Rev. Birkhead)

Place name:Allen School
Description:At 706 West 42nd Street. This school, which was formerly in the Westport school district, was named for Judge A.M. Allen, who was a board member in that district for nineteen years. (Direc. of Schools 1937-37; Annual Report 1905)

Description:A Catholic Church at Benton Boulevard and Lexington Avenue. The name commemorates the ascension of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. (Rev. Harris)

Place name:Athol
Description:A sub-division in the eastern part of the city. The investment company which platted the addition selected the name from a list of foreign place- names. The name chosen is that of a hilly district in northern Perthshire, Scotland; but it was selected because it was short and could be used effectively for advertising purposes. Probably for the same reasons it has become a stock American place-name, being found in at least nine other states. (Postal Guide 1922-1928; Morrow)

Place name:Attucks School
Description:A negro school at 1818 E. 19th Street. Named for Crispus Attucks, a man of mixed blood, probably Indian and negro, who was the leader of the mob which precipitated the so-called Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770, one of the incidents that prepared the way for the Revolutionary War. Place name:Bales School
Description:A private school taught sometime during the second quarter of the nineteenth century by Walter Bales at his farm. The home site was the same as the present 14th and Askew Avenue, Kansas City. (ANNALS OF K.C., 174)

Place name:Calvary Baptist Church
Description:A former Baptist Church at 9th and Harrison Street. It was built in 1889. In 1929 the congregation moved to 39th Street and Baltimore. It was named for the mount of crucifiction. (HIST. JACKSON 1881, 593; Whitney Vol. I, 424)

Place name:Cave Spring
Description:A spring near Charlotte Street and Gilham Road. In an early day it issued from a deep cave, and was a stopping place for Indians and travelers on the old Santa Fe Trail. Some historians speak of it as Big Cave Spring. (ANNALS OF K.C., 176; Kemper)

Place name:Central
Description:After the new city post office was completed in 1935 at Broadway and Pershing the old post office at 9th and Grand Avenue was used as a sub-station and called Central. It is central for the downtown district. (R. Mc. 1935; Richmond)

Place name:Centropolis
Description:A district in the southern part of the city. Originally it was a separate town promoted by Willard E. Winner and named by him. Centroplis is a hybrid coinage from the Latin centro- and the Greek polis, on patterns widely used in America; cf. Indianapolis, Minneapolis, etc. It may have been chosen because the town was about halfway between Independence and Kansas City; or Mr. Winner may have had in mind the desire of an early citizen of Kansas City to call the city Centropolis, doubtless of its central situation in the country as a whole. Place name:Chouteau's Church
Description:The first Catholic Church in what is now Kansas City. It was built in 1834 on the site of present Broadway between 11th and 12th Streets. It was named for the pioneer French family who were instrumental in establishing the church. (D.A.R., 89)

Place name:Church of the Immaculate Conception
Description:A Catholic Church at 11th and Broadway. Named for a doctrine held by the church. This church, which dates back to the second or third decade of the nineteenth century, once bore the name of a Jesuit saint, St. Francis Regis (1748-1820). (HIST. Place name:French Bottom
Description:An early day name for land along the Missouri River in Kansas City from the foot of Gillis Street to the mouth of the Kaw River. Place name:French Institute of Notre Dame de Zion
Description:At 3823 Locust Street. A Catholic school conducted by the order of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Zion. The order which was founded in Paris in 1842, has schools all over the world. Mount Zion, the holy city of Jerusalem, is an emblem of the Virgin Mary, and hence the name Our Lady of Zion. (Sister Marie)

Place name:Grace Church
Description:At 10th and Central. The church was organized in 1870 as St. Luke's. In 1873 the name was changed to Grace Church. Hastings writes that in the New Testament the word grace has reference to the mind of God as manifested towards sinners. "...His redemtive mercy, whereby He grants pardon to offenses and bids those who have gone astray return and accept His gift of slavation and everlasting life." (HIST. Description:At 714 East 11th Street. The school was built in 1868. It is one of the oldest schools in the city, and the oldest one under the original name. It was named for William Von Humboldt (1767-1835), a German educator who was Minister of Public Instruction of Prissia and a man active in the founding of the University of Berlin. (K.C. Description:An addition between 73rd and 79th Streets, and Troost Street and Prospect Avenue. The slightly high and rolling situation accounts for the name Heights. Mr. W.B. Clarke gave the name Marlborough because a town in Connecticut of that name was the home of his relatives. Description:From what is now Twelfth Street the ground slopes south to a valley thru which a stream ran east and connected with the Blue River. The name of the stream was derived from a grog-shop, which stood on the stream about 1848, called the O.K. House. The use of O.K. in the slang sense still current dates back according to Thornton, to 1828. The name of the Kansas City grog-shop of 1848 may supply another use of it. (Case 1888, 17)

Place name:Our Lady of Guadalupe
Description:A Mexican Catholic Church located at 23rd and Madison. The name was first applied to a picture representing the Immaculate Conception, which is said to have appeared to a Mexican shepherd at Guadalupe-Hidalgo, a place about five miles north of Mexico City, and which is preserved in the famous cathedral erected there.
